VIA KT400 motherboard roundup
ExtremeTech (www.extremetech.com) have punched up a 6 board KT400 shoot-out using the latest 2800+ processor from AMD. The shoot-out reveals that faster DDR400 memory doesn't deliver the best performance. The contenders are the MSI KT4-Ultra, the Asus A7V8X, Abit AT7 Max2, and boards from Soyo, Shuttle and Gigabyte. Here's a bit from the comparo:
If KT400 was expected to be the last Socket A chipset from VIA, they probably do not have anything new to showcase this year. Hence, it is logical for them to update the current version of their product - VIA KT400. In fact, that is what they do. According to this (http://www.tbreak.com/) web-site, Iwill will soon launch three new mainboards for the Socket A platform, one of them will be based on the KT400A chipset. The information is unconfirmed, but looks rather logically.

Dell takes back No. 1 PC maker spot from HP-Compaq
Dell has regained its No. 1 spot as seller of PC worldwide, edging out the combined might of Hewlett-Packard and Compaq. Market research firm International Data Corp. had the following to say:
"Dell is clearly the No. 1 worldwide at this point, by enough of a margin so that it's not a matter of statistical error," IDC analyst Roger Kay told Reuters.

Sources at rival research firm Gartner said that as of Thursday morning Dell seemed to be in the lead, but that it was close and Gartner may call it a draw. Both Gartner and IDC are set to release the data for third quarter PC sales later on Thursday.
This a pretty big achievement considering the market share the merged companies HP and Compaq would have got from their joint venture. You can read more on the story at Yahoo News (story.news.yahoo.com).

Microsoft beta site hacked
The server on which Microsoft makes its beta programs available for testing has been hacked by a group going by the name iNFLUENCE. The group broke in and managed to grab forthcoming editions of XP, .NET Server, and some confidential works in progress before getting locked out. Microsoft says that it doesn't know exactly how many programs were grabbed, but were keen to point out that no source code was taken. Microsoft said that the issue came to light when beta testers were mass-mailed on Friday with instructions to change their Passport usernames and passwords. However, "at no point was Passport compromised by this, because it's a totally different system," MS security flack Rick Miller is quoted as saying.
