| 90356 | 2002-10-17 22:54:00 | It probably is, but I refuse to believe it. The Cd drive is in a Compaq Presario 1240 laptop. Yesterday, it was happily playing Vivaldi for bub, when it stop, and windoze cd player came up with 'not music or data cd inserted'. Well I rebooted, still nort. Checked connections, still nort. Pulled it out, and took it to bits and little piece of plastic fell out. Cleaned the lens. Still nort. Now, the laser works, and the spindle spins. The head will move back in when pulled out, however I can't tell if it actually moves out (need a cd in to do that but the cd blocks my view) and the lens does move up and down ok. Can't see any blown chips. Have I missed something obvious or is just brain damaged? Cheers SiK |

A little white square of plastic about 5 x 5 mm and quite thin. Couldn't find what it had broken off... Actually, I pulled the floppy out while I was under the hood to give it a clean, and some plastic fell out of that too, but it still works :D >I hope you didn't peep right up the spout to see if the laser was working ... the light you can see is not all of the beam ... the main power (which can damage your eyes) is not visible. Corse not! I may be green but that don't mean I'm a cabbage! (drum roll) No I held a piece of paper over the lens and looked for a little red dot. It was present. Incidentally, the drive couldn't read CDRWs, only CDRs. Now it reads nothing! (^$*$^&@# laptops) What the hell at least the modem still works.. (touch wood) Anyone got a cheap PC for sale?... :D Cheers SiK |
