90383 2002-10-18 02:50:00 Hi,

I bought a new Kyocera FS1000+ a few months ago, and it installed without a problem on Windows X. Suddenly it seemed to stop printing, and gives

PCL XL error
Warning: IllegalAttribute

I installed, uninstalled, updated the latest drivers, installed the older drivers and then did a clean reinstall of Windows XP, but the problem has persisted. I have however narrowed down the problem. The printer prints fine if it is turned on after the computer is powered on, but gives the PCL error if it is on before the computer is turned on.

Does anybody have any suggestions how to fix this?

thanks,
Nic ?:|

90384 2002-10-18 03:55:00 Looks like a nice printer ...

Check the BIOS settings for the printer port. Try changing the mode ... from ECP to EPP or vice versa.

The junk sent out by the computer while it boots could be confusing the printer. Changing the port mode might might get different junk :D

Have you got a "proper" IEEE 1284 cable? (If the printer has worked sensibly before, you probably have.)

90385 2002-10-18 04:04:00 Hi there I can't seem to find too much information regarding your problem, however I have found a couple of articles that are slightly related to your problem, you could read to see if there is any information to help you . Also what program are you printing from as these seem to go with Outlook 2000 .

OL2000: (IMO) Error Message: "PCL XL Error" Printed When Printing a Fax ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q238473" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com)

OL2000: Error Message: There Was an Error When Printing Started ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q223414" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com)

Hope these can give you some insight .

90386 2002-10-18 14:12:00 hi,

The problem occurs when I print from any program. I reinstalled windows 2000 on another computer (which previously had XP, and had problems), and the printer worked without the slightest problem, so it seems to be Windows XP booting up sending out junk, which Windows 2000 doesn't seem to. Are there any plug n play processes that XP runs on startup that 2000 doesn't - that perhaps I can stop?

thanks,
Nic

90387 2002-10-18 15:07:00 I also have same printer, it runs fine on office computer running ME, I 'upgraded' office systems to xp professional and had the same problems...I downloaded latest drivers from kyocera site but for some reason xp would not accept them, printer worked after driver install, but on reboot spat out pages of weird text. I reverted back to ME and did not have any further problems, go figure ? I spent hours trying to cure the fault on xp. have friend with kyocera camera also having issues with xp. sorry this doesn't help your situation, but least I can share the grief xp caused me. greenglass (1432)
90388 2002-10-18 15:31:00 seems kyocera has issues with xp. greenglass (1432)

90390 2002-10-19 01:05:00 Oh, two of you now ... looks like another XP "advanced feature" :D

If you have a network (or even if youi haven't ;-)) a printer server might be a work-around. They are not very expensive now, and are a nice thing to have, anyway. The vendor of the printer might help you to get one to try ... they want to sell printers which work ;-) and keep their customers happy.

90391 2002-10-19 02:14:00 Well I think that I have now managed to solve my own problem. Since I've been in academics for so long I thought I'd try fixing it one step at a time. If it worked once with Xp, then it could work again.

After much playing around, and lots of wasted paper I finally stumbled across some settings in the bias "PnP" menu, these were "Reset Configuration Data" (for something with 4 letters beginning with E), and
"Resources controlled by Auto / Manual". I selected reset the configuration data, and set resources controlled by manual.

After lots of start up ad shutting down I haven't been able to break it yet. While I have an idea of what these settings do, I can't in all honesty say I know for sure - could someone perhaps enlighten us?

Before I did this I also tried reinstalling the old printer, and then the kyocera, so also not sure if this had some affect or not.

90392 2002-10-19 02:17:00 Oh, and also forgot to say, my supplier had talked about network card for the printer except it's a little bit expensive at 400, half the price of the printer.

Does anyone know of any cheaper options? I would quite like to have running by itself of off the network switch.
