| 90873 | 2002-10-19 20:36:00 | Hey there.....I am running XP Pro and have an Asus pci dsl modem......the problem is that the damn thing disconnects after long periods of time. The auto disconnect is not enabled in the network properties but it still happens. A guy I work with has the same set up and even the same isp and doesn't get the problem. Any ideas Todd |

| 90874 | 2002-10-19 21:21:00 | Cannot be of much help in why it might be disconnecting but if you are away from the computer when it happens and want to have it auto reconnect go onto the net and locate a freeware program called Dunce 2.52, not sure if it will work with XP, does with all the other windows systems, while it is designed for dialups it works also with DSL and will auto reconnect you. | duckyduck (197) | ||

| 90880 | 2002-10-29 23:25:00 | I am not famuiliar with that modem but my experience may help I had an old ISA Dynalink modem and when I changed my MB I had to get a PCI type I immediately had problems such as you experience. I dug around and found some interesting facts. There appear to be 2 types of WinModems. HSF and HCF The HSF is almost totally software driven. The HCF is part software but the important Charge Pump is Hardware. I tried 4 different modems. An HSF (an utter disaster) and HCF (a hell of a lot better but not perfect) and one using an INTEL chipset and an external The later two are 100%. The external is perfect, the INTEL Chipset one has LINUX drivers available so I suspect is more Hardware than software based. The HSF type I think (but am prepared to be corrected) drops out becuase the CPU is being interrupted all the time. |

| 90882 | 2002-10-29 23:56:00 | Opps sorry Missed that Could it be anything to do with the Micro outages that have plagued XTRA or have they fixed those Another factor is the distance from an exchange and the type of phone cable for the link as with ADSL the copper is used as a carrier for an RF signal. Some suburbs still use paper insulation and this is quite bad for adsl (mine does for example) |
