90722 2002-10-19 04:18:00 hello

i have to PC's networked using Realtek RTL8139 NIC's system 1 is running Win98 and system 2 is running Win2K. i want to share some folders on system 2 over the network, so i right clicked on the folders clicked share this folder and then clicked ok. the first folder is visiable/accsesable using system 1 but other folders aren't. i thought it might be a permission thing but they are fine. i've changed the name of the folder, moved to folder to another location, change form 2 word name to one word and no luck. anyone got any ideas?

thanx in advance

90724 2002-10-19 05:21:00 You are looking at the other PCs directory aren't you?, not just in My Network Places???

Navigate to My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>%Workgroup%>%PC Name%

And see if they are there. the folders in My Network Places are just shortcuts.

90725 2002-10-19 06:27:00 damm looks like my first description of the problem wasn't very good, guess thats what happens when u rush. The problem is that the Win98 system cant see the folders/directorys being shared by the Win2K system, but for the exception of the shared music folder(not that stupid "My Music" folder just a normal folder call "Music"). 90726 2002-10-19 07:19:00 sounds funny if you can see one folder but not another. Does the folder you can't see have the same "parent" as the shared folder you can see? If it does and you still can't see it see if you can see it when you get access as 'administrator' rather than another user.
Other thing to check is in the 'security' tab of the properties of the unseen folder 'check' the 'Allow inheiritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object'.
hope this makes sense

90727 2002-10-19 07:49:00 Also - if the folders are in my documents or winnt, then it is harder to share them
If you share them in a new folder in C drive then it will be easier
It sounds like you have already created a username in the local users of the W2k PC that the W98 PC uses to log in as this is another common problem.

90728 2002-10-21 05:12:00 i can't find the security's tag under the folders properties, i know the tag you are talking about as i have seen it in NT4.0 but just dismissed its absense in 2k. the folders are shared on D:(secondary partition) but D: is also set as "My Documents". I have created a user accound for the win98 system (found that out at a L.A.N Party after about 2hrs of tryin).

thanx for the replies

90729 2002-10-21 06:55:00 Security tag is only if that particular partition is formatted as NTFS rather than FAT32. In this case as you haven't got the tag you haven't got NTFS which also may have made the file sharing interesting. Just out of curiosity have you shared the entire C: in 2k? [just to see if it is the permissions]. In W2K if an object is explicitly not shared then that permission takes precedence over a shared permission.

But hang on that only works in a NTFS enviroment...... er I dunno.
Just try sharing the C: and see what happens ?:|
