90595 2002-10-18 20:35:00 I must tell about a idea I had, a friend of mine did not have a audio CD player, So I thought why not use a computer CDROM drive, after all you can not see the track disply when you are in the other room anyway (then when the drive no long works you just get a new drive and it is all fixed for about $90), computer power supply, in some type of case, so the other day it only took me about a hour to put the project together, the hardest part was connecting the coax lead on the back of the 36x CDROM drive to the RCA connecters, but I got it together and it sounded great, then I thought I wonder why there is a "faulty" label on the CDROM case, maybe the IDE output is faulty? so I used a slim line computer case (from a IBM PS/1 computer) with a flop down cover that hides the floppy drive and CDROM drive (only as temporary until I could find a better case) were the plug in boards are plugged into a extension board and used to sit parallel to the mother board (boards removed of course), it was a pity I could not find a blank floppy drive cover, the cover I had was too big for the case hole and too small for the chassis hole, so anyway a bit of scrap red cardboard was better than nothing, So the player was taken around to the friends home and installed, and it was just the right width for their home stereo to sit on top of the old computer case, I could not of planed the width any better, a pity the case was not black, but then my friend said he could take care of that with a bit black paint, the RCA lead was plugged into the CD input of the stereo and as we listened to James Last, piano a gogo, the installation was a big hit, ............ but then found out later in the day the CDROM draw does not open sometimes, bugger. 90597 2002-10-18 22:04:00 One of the guys at overclockers NZ did something similar with a 4x drive, except his is standalone with it's own voltage regulator and amp outs, etc. Have a look here (forums.overclockers.co.nz)

yes very good, but unfortunately it reminds me of the see through iMAC's that take three hours to replace the mains fuse. or three hours to fix anything on it,

90601 2002-10-20 02:42:00 If the drawer does "not open, sometimes", keep a straightened paperclip handy. The wee hole in the front panel is for fixing that problem :D Graham L (2)
90602 2003-02-02 00:44:00 Has anybody here used a home-built CD Player on a concert-sized sound system? If so, was the sound quality ok? somebody (208)

90604 2003-02-02 01:17:00 Quick question....
What voltage does a CDR Actually use?
Can i run it of a simple 12(ish) volt power supply or a 5(ish) volt power supply or will i need both?
