| 91096 | 2002-10-20 05:20:00 | Hi All, I have a second pc which is running windows 95. Can I use the Windows 98 SE disc I received with my newer pc to upgrade from Windows 95? If I can, do I just put the disc in and follow instructions or does '95 have to be removed first...sorry...not much idea have I! Thanks :8} |

Assuming therefore that you will delete it off the first machine before installing it on the second ;) the answer is maybe. Is your original machine powerful enough to run 98? Win 98 uses a lot more resources than Win 95 did. What are the system specifications? |

That aside, if its a full version of 98SE it may be that simple, yes. It would perhaps be better to reformat though. You should get ALL your drivers for Motherboard, Modem etc together first, that 98 will need. They wont always be the same ones 95 uses. What are the specs of the machine, you need a reasonable spec to run 98SE, more than for Win 95. |

That small "detail" aside, if it is a upgrade and you have the hard drive space and ram available, you should have few hassles, just a matter of dropping in the CD and following the prompts, if the disk detects not enough hard drive space or ram it should prompt you with this information. If the disk is a full version CD I would suggest saving what you want from the computer and then reformatting and installing on a clean drive to avoid any problems with old and new files. |

| 91102 | 2002-10-20 19:26:00 | Hi, Thanks for you reply. The specs for this machine are as follows; CPU - PR200 Ram MB - 96MB Hard Drive - 2 GB I don't play games and in the main this second PC is used for word-processing. That is why I want Windows 98 so I can have Office 2000. It is Windows 98 SE Update. I guess the important thing is, If, I stuff up and it doesn't work can I simply put my Windows 95 disc back in and reload that? You are maybe thinking...this person should just leave her PC alone! ;-) Thanks Again |

My old 166mhz Pentium with 128meg RAM actually ran slightly quicker on Win98. If you go ahead, you should be asked if you want to save your old Win95 OS in case you change your mind and want to revert back. This will cost you 50meg of Hard Disk space but if you choose not to, there will be no going back. Once you do it and everything is running well, it pays to run the FAT32 utility that comes with Win98. Well deal with that later if you go ahead and dont already understand what it is all about.. Piece of cake, go for it. |
