| 90935 | 2002-10-19 23:28:00 | I've been cleaning out history and cookies found that my bro (i guess it is him or his mates when they come around) has been accessing pornographic websites..and some dating websites...and many of them are definately unapproperiate as i took a look at the dating ones...see what they actualyl were.. And wish to download a filter/webpage blocker, ONE that actually blocks the webpage etc, as i tried one or 2 before, one of them actually blocks it but also refuses MSN and OE access... the other one definately blocks but unblocks if u refresh the page 2-3 times..which aint good enuf.. Is there anything around that blocks the website, and WONT unblock if u refresh the page..also doesnt play around with MSN and OE... I am with quik.co.nz as a ISP, and they dont have filters available...so..it'd have to be something on my computer that i'll have to do.. I'm running WINXP home edition :-) If you recommend something thats shareware, then i'll consider the price, depending on location of where the price is..etc..i know i mite be expecting something in US dollars, but..i hope theres something from the...land of the long white cloud :D hehe I hope to get some help Many regards Chris |

Whenever you find one that your bro has been to, add it to the hosts file - he won't be able to go there again. Period. and it won't affect normal browsing or use of MSN etc. G P |

It has info and instructions on the site and like Graham says, if you find other sites being accessed just add the address to the hosts file. Once you've set up your hosts file set it to a Hidden attribute and have your settings at "Do not show hidden (and system) files" if there's a chance your brother might know about host files. What he cant see he might not go looking for. ;-) By the way, you had better not sing the praises about Press F1 to your family too much or they might come here looking for advice on how to undo all your hard work. My own daughter has done just that! :O :D |

| 90939 | 2002-10-20 02:52:00 | No it isn't password protected, but if they don't know what it is, or how to use it, then they won't even know it is there. G P |

| 90940 | 2002-10-20 03:11:00 | Cool! But is there anything else i could use..incase he does know...coz i actually dont know what he actually knows about computers..and yah theres aways the chance of him finding out... Like maybe something that actually shows him the page is blocked and that he actually realises i am "watching" wat he is surfing coz i dont think he actually knows lol..also definately password protected :-) |

| 90941 | 2002-10-20 04:20:00 | Why not keep a few of the links from his history, and then confront him and show him you know. I doubt he knows enough to find the hosts file if he doesn't even know how to clear the history! Often letting him know you know will be enough. There are free monioring tools out there can can be set to take periodic screenshots, etc, but they are big resource users, and can be disabled if he knows how. G P |

| 90942 | 2002-10-20 04:38:00 | Even if he does delete the History, if you run Spider you will still be able to see the urls of sites visited since the index.dat was last deleted. Spider ought to run on Win XP - have a look in the FAQs for the index.dat one for more info. Like Graham says, if he knows that you can soon find out where he's been he's likely to think twice about it. That should be as effective as filters as you can tell him that if he doesn't play the rules he'll be banned from the PC and you'll tell your Mum and Dad. Just don't tell him how you can find out. |

| 90943 | 2002-10-20 19:55:00 | You can try Cybersitter from http://www.cybersitter.com It's US$39.95 but worth it because they update your PC's filter library with all known porn sites (a bit like Norton Anti Virus). Once itstalled it cannot be disabled or uninstall without the password. Two of the cute functions with Cybersitter are 1. redirecting porn sites to safe sites eg if your brother try to view a sex site, it might redirect the page to www.savethepanda.com etc. 2. changes your search engines so that you cannot search for sex sites. Another deterrent is you can set Cybersitter to email you any exception log so your brother will know if he triggers a site you'll know one way or the other. |
