90893 2002-10-19 21:52:00 Can someobne tell me why the PC Company like to call themselves PC manufacturers?

I would have thought Computer assemblers would have been a better and more truthfull description.

JMHO,

BALDY:-)

90894 2002-10-19 22:05:00 I guess in the same way that bakers manufacture cakes from individual ingredients, so to PC Company...

And manufacture suggest a large quantity of product which the PC Company do...

90895 2002-10-19 22:19:00 Personally I agree with you Baldy; after all they just put a hand full of components in a box and ship it out, they don’t actually manufacture the mainboards, CPUs HDDs etc do they!

Cheers

90898 2002-10-19 23:53:00 its like all other electrical products (and a lot of non eletrical products).

there may be thousands of brands but only a handfull of actuall componant makers. open up a tv and you can find different brand parts inside. tv's are proberly a good example. thousands of brands around the world but only 3 or 4 tube makers.

I am not really sure myself, but the reason I ask, is that the PCCompany makes a big deal of it........

90900 2002-10-20 01:15:00 So do they all. I think that all laptops are manufactured by 2 or 3 factories. Compaq, HP, DEC, etc, etc, advertise their unique products. HP's laser printers are a Canon mechanism. I've seen Wang printers which looked "just like" HP ones ...peeling off the Wang label exposed the HP one. Graham L (2)
90901 2002-10-20 01:59:00 I think thay say "manufacturer" to distinguish them selves from "bond & bond" type stories who have pre-made package deals and if you want any thing else then too bad.......

even HP and Compaq don't manufacturer computers......

if you get right down to it there are only a few companys who make the parts that the rest of the world "assemble"

* two main CPU manufacturers (maybe two smaller ones)
* four Hard drive manufacturers
* 6-8 motherboard manufacturers

I think that "manufacture" is just to say "we do more than just sell boxes"

I did some work for a PC manufacturer a few years and it was a job that any monkey with a screwdriver can do.

90902 2002-10-20 07:11:00 They do manufacture. They just don't design the parts themselves.

What's worse are the rebranded DSE items. They'd be good if they didn't say DSE on them.

Also Harlry Davidson are not American. Half their components are Japanese.
