2002-10-21 10:29:00 | You don't click on an image - you copy the code beside it and paste THAT in! Don't talk to me about motorbikes. Decided to join my husband for a ride yesterday and borrowed my neighbour's daugher's bike (and my daughter's bike gear). The trouble is.... I've only been on a bike 3 times in the last 20 years. The last time was up north a few months ago at a camping ground. 3 times round the site with the dog in hot pursuit to check that I didn't fall off. The time before I took my daughter's new bike up the gravel drive for her (and stalled it at the letterbox). Anyhow.... changing gear not a problem (after the first 2 starts when I nearly did a couple of wheel stands - the clutch is rather sensitive. It took a bit to master it from standstill!), staying on was not a problem - but the corners leave a bit to be desired. A bit of lack of confidence after all this time. Mind you, the wind didn't help. 20 km and I'd had enough. Really felt that I should be carrying an L plate - modified to MRL (Mature Re-Learner). Am now contemplating how much work is involved to get back to speed!

2002-10-21 10:31:00 | You only have 1 winword.exe. The other one is a system file, with a final suffix of.pf (prefetch) It shouldnt make any difference if you have made changes or not, save as should work normally. Too late to read all the posts but have you done a repair? Start Word, click on help, and choose "detect and repair". It will repair any corrupt files, and will need to get them from your CD. You cannot click on the emoticons. You look at the characters beside each one and either just type them in, or cut and paste (NOT the emoticons themselves, the characters beside them) e.g. typing : then ) together : ) will give a smily face (I have left spaces or you would only see :)

2002-10-21 22:36:00 | Thanks godfather, I had done a repair before but I did one again, following your instructions to the letter. This time it prompted me to restart the computer whereas the last repair didn't. I then opened a previously saved document, tried saving as but the orange box was back! I then tried something else and it seems to be working - instead of going into 'my documents' and opening one then trying to save as, I opened Word from the start menu, then opened a document and tried saving as. When I do this, it goes straight to the dialogue box for saving under another name, but when I open an existing document straight away and try it, that cursed orange box appears! I had always done it this way before, so why I can't now is a mystery. Would this be the reason for all my problems? I've done this several times prior to posting to see if it ever flashes when I've opened Word first, but no, it only does it when I go straight into an existing document. Spooky! So while I haven't got rid of the problem completely, I have found a way around it - open Word first! Comments would still be appreciated! Thanks all! Note to Heather: if you want some help/advice/support on getting back into motorcycling, e-mail me on write-click@paradise.net.nz and I'll do all I can - we need more women motorcyclists! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

2002-10-22 09:43:00 | Am I clear on this? When you open Word then open a document from Word all is well. When you open Windows Explorer and click a file to open it you have problems? This gave me an idea..... Open Windows Explorer Click Tools; Folder Options Click on the tab File Types Scroll down to Microsoft Word Document Click Edit. My settings are as follows (Win 98SE with Word 2000): Actions: New, Open, Print, Printto Click the Edit button: Application used to perform action: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n" Use DDE is checked DDE Message: [REM _DDE_Minimize][FileOpen("%1")][FilePrintSetup "%2 on p",.DoNotSetAsSysDefault=1][FilePrint 0][DocClose 2][FilePrintSetup ""] Application: WinWord DDE Application Not Running: [FileOpen("%1")][FilePrintSetup "%2 on p",.DoNotSetAsSysDefault=1][FilePrint 0][FileExit 2] Topic: System I'd suggest printing the above then going in and seeing if there are any obvious differences. If there are - post the difference here and see if anyone can spot the problem. As far as motorbikes go...I spent a few years way back commuting round town by bike. The husband saw a nasty accident one day and decided it was time to promote me to a car. Time past, kids and labradors appeared and bikes disappeared into the past. Husband got back into bikes two years ago with some friends. They totally enjoy weird things like dirt roads, tracks through trees and deep mud holes. Having to waterblast himself down before removing his gear means it was a really successful day. The kid bought her first bike last year for commuting to uni and work. She has also been known to roam further afield with her boyfriend and their mates and has done a fair bit of motorway commuting and out of town stuff. Now I really like the idea of bikes but zooming round paddocks and up sand hills leaves me totally cold. As far as commuting goes - I work part time, avoid rush hour and do quite a lot from home. Commuting days can mean stopping in at the supermarket on the way home, picking up and delivering things.... , if going out from home then the dog often comes. To get back into bikes means changes in life style - and I have to decide if it's worth it. What threw me on Sunday was the realisation that after 20 years it's not just a case of jumping on a bike and blatting off into the distance. There's quite a lot to relearn and practise is required! When we were up north earlier this year my friend and I (we took the van as support vehicle for the riders in the party - and to carry the dog)hired quad bikes and went out on the dunes at Ahipara for a few hours. So I didn't think I was that badly out of practise!

2002-10-22 20:51:00 | Thanks for all that Heather, there are a few differences in what I found in Explorer and what you have in yours. All is the same up until DDE Message - mine just has this: [REM_DDE_Direct][FileNew("1%") and nothing more. Then under DDE Application Not Running, mine has nothing listed there at all. I just tried it again, opening something through Explorer (My Documents) then saving as, but the orange box returned. I then opened Word from the Start Menu first, then opened the same document and tried saving as again - no problem on one document, but on another it came up with "Normal was being edited by another Word Session. If you save the document with the original name, you will overwrite any changes made in the other session. Do you want to save the document using the original name anyway?" So now I have yet another problem! I only got into bikes around four years ago - I had been writing for a bike magazine and they asked me to do a road test of a second-hand bike - but of course I didn't have my licence! They then said "but you do ride, don't you?" Ah, no! I hadn't seen the need when all I was doing was photographing and interviewing riders! A few days later there was an ad in the paper for a free motorcycle lesson so I felt guilty and went along. I wasn't 100% sure I was keen (I was in my late 30s!) but pride got the better of me, I carried on, got my licence and bought an RG150. Joined WIMA, met my boyfriend at one of their rallies, he rides road (just done his 16th 1000 miler) as well as dirt (trail and adventure) so a year later I was on a new XRB200 (lent by a dealer!) travelling around the South Island with him and his mates. Not that interested in trail riding (too hard!) but wouldn't mind an adventure bike. I used to co-drive in a rally car so love gravel! Just in the process of selling the RG and have placed an order for a BMW F650CS - very nice! Looking forward to summer - but not those cars with flashing lights! As for quads, hate 'em! Have tried one of the racing ones and it scared the living daylights out of me. Give me two wheels any day!

2002-10-22 21:15:00 | Godfather or Babe Ruth - got any ideas here? Would removing the file association in Explorer and then getting Explorer to recreate it do the trick? Another thought is to copy and paste my setting. If it fixes it fine, if it doesn't then copy and paste your settings back (from the post above). Sorry write-click - not sure on this one. As the thread has turned to bikes if someone doesn't answer it may pay to repost asking if "Will removing a file association in Explorer and then getting Explorer to recreate it ...." Alan's photo has appeared in Kiwi Rider a few times lately. Covered in mud and grinning from ear to ear as I remember. Ian takes his mates away for a spot of adventure then highlights all their faults in articles. His new bike is a 450DRZ - there is no way my feet can now touch the ground. In the weekend I borrowed a 250XT but think I need something a little smaller whilst I get my confidence back.

2002-10-22 22:38:00 | OK Heather P, Firstly do not copy registry settings of a Win9x system to a Windows XP system They are not (necessarily) the same. Ok, let's try and explain the icon flashing in the Taskbar: From information in Tweakui - Focus When an application needs your attentionor when it simply wants to annoy youit steals the focus from the application in which youre currently working. This leads to frustration as you flip back and forth between windows. The settings in the Focus category prevent that scenario by causing applications to flash their taskbar buttons to get your attention rather than stealing focus from the application in the foreground. The default value for (Prevent applications from stealing focus) ForegroundLockTimeout is 0x00030D40, or 200000. This value is the time in milliseconds before Windows XP allows an application to steal the focus from the foreground application. To convert 200000 to seconds, divide it by 1000 (200 seconds). If the value ForegroundFlashCount is set to 0 (Flash taskbar button until I click on it) it causes the taskbar button to flash until you click it; otherwise, the taskbar button flashes the number of times you set in ForegroundFlashCount (Flash taskbar button N times). Goobledegook to you? OK basically the Windows application is trying to get your attention, so either it will pop-up over the existing window or it flashes the icon of the application in the taskbar - usually in Orange. So the program is saying help me I need some user input here! A way of setting the above 'features' is by using the TWEAKUI for Windows XP Utility (available from PowerToys for XP (www.microsoft.com). From MSDN ...If you want your application to get the user's attention when the window is not active, use the FlashWindow function to let the user know that a message is waiting. This function flashes the window button. Once the user clicks the window button to activate the window, your application can display the message.... Now as described in the MS Knowledge Base the workaround is ...To work around this issue, click the minimized Word document icon on the taskbar. Word is minimized and the dialog box that you have selected opens. Click the Close button (the X in the upper-right corner of the dialog box) to close the dialog box. Then, click the Word icon on the taskbar to view the Word document.... If you do the above what dialogue boxes appear? What is Word trying to tell you? Now WHY is the program flashing - only you may be able to tell me that. In other words to enable me to tell you how to get round (or fix) the issue I would need the EXACT steps that you follow to arrive at the problem as described. Let's try all that first Heather P / Write-Click and work from there. Cheers, Babe.

2002-10-23 23:47:00 | Thanks Babe, I'll try to spell out exactly what I'm doing to get this orange flashing - Click on Start menu; click on My Documents; click on a folder - say editing work; click on a saved document within that folder - say Community Help 2001 Update; click on save as and the orange box appears. After that, I have to click on the orange box to bring up the dialogue box which allows me to save it under a different name. However, if I click on Start menu; open Word; then open the saved document as above, it allows me to save as without the orange box appearing. I am running Windows XP and do not fiddle with settings, etc. because (in case you hadn't guessed!) I don't know what I'm doing. As mentioned, someone came around who said they could clear out my unused files, etc. and the problem has only been happening since then. I don't think he knows all that much about computers either, as there were two copies of Word listed on my Start menu and he said he could delete one - then he looked horrified and said both had gone! I don't know what he did next, but then he said it was okay as it had returned. As you can imagine, I am not keen to have him anywhere near my computer again, even to fix what he may have done wrong - if he knew what that was! I didn't really want him to touch it in the first place but he told me it would slow down my computer. Better that than this annoying flashing! Any ideas of how to get rid of it would be appreciated - but please bear in mind I make novices look intelligent, so any solutions (if it is something I can reasonably do myself) will need to be in pretty simple, step-by-step language! I appreciate all the help so far, even if the problem hasn't gone away entirely. Heather, I'll have to look through all my old KRs for mud-splattered men called Ian and Alan! (That's who I write for.) My last few articles have been on the supermoto at Taupo, last year's 1000 Miler (my other half is in that article - Andy) and the Blackhead Adventure Ride. Yes, I know the not-being-able-to-touch-the-ground feeling - that is why my new BMW had to be ordered from Germany - low seat option and also lower profile rear tyre - takes 30mm off the height! (Necessary when you're only five feet one!)

2002-10-24 01:34:00 | Nope, I bow to Dragon Lady! Lots of people think that's me but I go under my own name - check out pages 88-89 of the September 2002 issue; 165-167 of June 2002 (that's me back view on page 165); 115-118 September 2001; pages 71-74 December 2001; pages 43-48 February 2002 and pages 108-110 June 2001 - plus some other supermoto stuff earlier this year, and I cover Wanganui for them every year. I'd love to know who Dragon Lady is, I think I'd like her! (My other half, Andy - in some of the photos - says I breathe fire sometimes so I could be her!) I also did a series for BikeMart on learning to ride - back in 1998-99. It's fun, but the editing work is what pays the bills! | write-click (2248) | |
