2002-10-21 06:46:00 | I would first take the easy step of finding and deleting "normal.dot" This is the default setting for word, and provided you have not configured a lot of different settings it wont matter. Most users always use the defaults. Normal.dot is recreated whenever word starts, if its not present. A corrupt file can cause all manner of problems. Use 'search' to see where it is. It may be marked as a system file, so make sure your search enables these to be seen. Often people say "I can't find it" but it must be there, its usually in the templates area.

2002-10-21 06:49:00 | It looks as though you have Word 2000. The SR1 means it has had service pack 1 applied. Service pack 2 has been out for a while now, you should think about applying it as Babe says. It is sometimes included on magazine CDs, its a large file. | godfather (25) | |
2002-10-21 06:51:00 | Hi, I can't help with the XP problem but as far as the templates go.... Open your document and a new empty one. Copy the contents of your existing document into the empty one. Click "File, Save" Give it an interesting name Change the "Save as type" to Document Template (*.dot) You will notice that the file location will now change to a folder called "Templates" To use this document: Open Word, Click on File, New You will be offered all the templates available in the template directory. Click on the one you've just created. There will no longer be the requirement to "Save As" - just to "Save". If you ever need to change the base template you will find it in a folder somewhere in: C:\Windows\Program Files\MSOffice\.......\Templates (You could just "save as" your existing file and change it to a template but as the "save as" is causing the problem - do it by the above method). | 91028 | 2002-10-21 07:47:00 | Thanks, I tried downloading the updates but when prompted whether I wanted to install it (and clicking yes), a box came up stating that the expected version of the program was not found on my system. HELP! What next? I also did as godfather suggested and ran a search for normal.dot. It came up with two results - Normal C:/Documents and Settings/FAYE/Application Data, and Normal C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Templates/1033. Do I just delete both of these files from the search location? Do you think this will solve my problem? Also, as mentioned, Word was part of Works Suite which was on my computer when I purchased it. I have the original disks for it - the one with Word on it has Works Suite 2001 Setup, Works 6.0 and Word 2000 SR-1. I am running XP Home Edition. Sorry to be taking up so much time, but would you advise me to remove Word through Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, then reinstall it? Or is there something else I should be doing? Thanks again for everyone's advice, particularly Heather (?) for the template info.

2002-10-21 08:36:00 | Writeclick did you install the update from Babes link above - if so that is the wrong update (its for word 2002) - the one you need is this one Word 2000 SR-1 Update (support.microsoft.com) Hope that update helps, as it isn't covered in the fixes but its definately worth a try. Doesn't seem to be mentioned as happening in Word 2000 as we both have had it?:|

2002-10-21 08:45:00 | Hi again, I realised Babe Ruth had advised me to download the Word 2002 update but I had 2000 so I went back to the update site and downloaded the correct version and installed it. The save-as problem (she says with fingers crossed!) appears to have gone, but now I have three results when searching for normal.dot! The two mentioned in another of my posts, and now this one that has just appeared - ~$Normal C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Templates/1033. Before I head off for a cup of tea and a lie down after all that confusing computer work, can someone please tell me if I should delete these Normal files from the search result field just by hitting delete and saying yes when it asks if I want to send them to the recycle bin? And why did another one appear AFTER the search was completed? Bring back typewriters, I say, you knew where you were with them! (Only joking...) | write-click (2248) | |
2002-10-21 08:53:00 | Write-click, Well sorry for confusing you re the updates I wasn't exactly sure of the version of Word you had, and I think someelse had a 2002 version of word with the same problem. Anyway you've got the right update now and that's the important thing. As for the NORMAL.DOT files... well if all is working you can leave them alone. Aint Broke Don't Fix. Cheers, Babe.

2002-10-21 09:58:00 | Thanks Babe, I was hoping to be able to post and say "yippee, problem solved!" but... After doing the update I opened an existing document and tried save as - and that *&%$^#@! orange flashing box was back! As a last resort I deleted the two Normal files (the third one had mysteriously disappeared...) and tried again - but the orange box returned. I am now at a total loss regarding what to do next. The template info has worked, but I still haven't got rid of that annoying problem. I use save as a lot and don't always want to use templates, sometimes I just want an original copy of something then want a copy with certain alterations saved under another name. Please tell me I can still do this! I WAS doing it up until a week or so ago! What's gone wrong and can we fix it? (Where's Bob the Builder when you need him!) And, another frustrating thing, I wanted to put some crying emoticons in this message but I can't even figure out how to do that - aint I sad!

2002-10-21 10:02:00 | :_| :_| :_| :_| There, I did it for you! To insert emoticons click on the link. You will see some symbols. The crying one is : _ | - note: to get them to display I put spaces between them. Remove the spaces and you get :_|

2002-10-21 10:16:00 | Thanks Heather, is there an emoticon for tearing ones hair out? I am getting so frustrated I could spit! I went to Microsoft's NZ site hoping to find answers but of all the save as problems listed, this didn't appear to be amongst them. I also planned to contact them to ask for advice but the $35 fee kind of put me off... Thanks for the info on the templates, that HAS worked! But no one has told me yet if the two winword.exe files that a search found mean I have two copies and whether I need to delete anything. I had a thought earlier that it may have been because I had opened a document and not made any changes to it before trying to save as, but should that make a difference? I am pretty sure I have opened documents before and saved them under different names without first making any changes. I may head off to bed soon and cry myself to sleep, but hopefully there will be some night owls who will magically solve my problem overnight! I still can't figure out how to insert the emoticons though - I clicked on the link, but when I tried clicking on the image, nothing happened! Give me a motorbike any day - far less trouble and a lot more fun!
