Been out of involvement with manufacturing for too long now, but probably F&P are one of the few big manufacturers left that do pretty well everything from design, R&D, QA, right through to manufacture, sales, marketing, the lot. Massport would be another. |

Yes Terry, I remember when we had car assembly plants out the Hutt. I can't see why the PC Company can't put "Assembled In NZ" No way are the manufactured here. Incidently, the Harley Davidson plants in Japan ARE ACTUALLY Harley Davidson plants. |

| 90906 | 2002-10-21 02:45:00 | There is a difference between assemblers & manufacturers. Manufacturers like Digital (who I worked for) Compaq, Acer, etc actually design & manufacture motherboards & the associated Bios. Believe it or not they have 100's of highly paid engineers designing what we called 'balanced systems' from the silicon up. Some of this manufacturing is outsourced - but Digital used make all its own Motherboards PC & Servers in the Taiwan plant. Components (graphic chips etc) are supplied to meet 'manufacturer's specs'. Systems were subjected to shock & heat tests, windows compatibility etc prior to release to Mfg. Systems that are assembled from this week's cheapest set of components available 'off the dock' in Taiwan do not have the same reliability of performance. Sure you can assemble a superfast PC (it's my hobby) but it is not the same. Really, it's not the same. So unless they are designing & building balanced systems- they are 'local assemblers'. I have often wondered if half the computer woes on this forum aren't as a result of the "hotrodded" mish-mash of installed components to make up a custom built computer. |

Some of them are actually just rebranded products of another manufacturer/brand. It's just that DSE has a kind of bad name to it in some circles. But the actual product is fine. Another example is in the car industry. A lot of them are just another vehicle with a new badge and a minor (very) change in styling. Daihatsu Charade and Toyota Starlet being one example. They're the same vehicle. But I'm sure most people would much rather have a Toyota. |
