91264 2002-10-21 01:03:00 I have a number of CDR's full of digital photos. However when I go to view these, it is telling me they cannot open as they are in an unreadable format.
I have never had this problem before, and would be gutted if all the 3-4000 photos are now no good. This was my main form of backup.
They are all .jpg images.
Can anyone help with a tool to fix this problem? I have tried opening them in both my CD Rom and CD Writer (D & E drive) but get the same message each time.
Help please.

91265 2002-10-21 02:01:00 Are you able to view any other JPG's that are on your PC?
You may just need to try and open them in a different program.
What program are you trying to view them in?

91266 2002-10-21 02:25:00 wot OS r u using? U or somebidy else might have changed the file extensions by accident. If u think so in Win Xp go to tools, Folder options, thne click on View and untick "hide extensions for known file types" if u have an older version of windows just rename it and place a . and the file extension after it. eg.
somepic.jpg

or just try a different viewer like Irfan View (www.tucows.co.nz) which is a stable and reliable image viewer.

cheers,

91267 2002-10-21 08:33:00 I am using Win 98, the same photo editing programme I have been using for the past 4 years.
There must be some software out there that can diagnose a CD and allow you to read whats on it.
The file names all come up, the folder names, but still no photo. They are in jpg, and yes, I will try the one suggested as an alternative viewer.
More help please. Its frustrating!

91268 2002-10-21 08:44:00 r you able to view any other jpg images that are on your PC? I strongly beleive that the file extension has changed because of a user or maybe a trojan. Have u scanned ur computer for viruses and trojans lately? vk_dre (195)
91269 2002-10-21 08:44:00 try copying to hd and renaming with .jpg extention. I had a similar problem when I edited photos and saved the edited version. Put .jpg on the end and they were back to normal wotz (335)

that's exactly wot i said earlier valocon, have u tried that? if this doesn't work then u probably have changed the picture's properties, and it is displaying a blank picture thus no file.

91271 2002-10-21 09:35:00 Can one rename them all at once, or does one have to do each file individually? - which could take hours. ssssss (2100)

If you got DOS, yes.

type:

ren x:/directory/jpegs/*.* *.jpg

and that will wizz you through it (substitue your own drive and directory)

What brand of CD-r is it?

Some earlier brands were suseptical to early detioration.

Hold it up to a light bulb (sorry globe :D) and see if you can see through it. If it is quite transparent, the CD may be knackered.

Otherwise, has anything on your system changed since you last read a CD?
