2002-10-20 04:35:00 | I posted on Oct. 15 about trying to save as with Word documents and getting a flashing orange box at the bottom of my screen that I then had to click on in order to save as. Jess told me to do an install/repair which seemed to fix it, but I've done that twice since then as the problem returned - and, like Arnie, it's back again! It is really frustrating as in my job I used a formatted document, make changes to it then use save as to save the changes and this is taking me a lot longer each time. I've got Windows XP on an Athlon 1600 machine. The annoying thing is, it doesn't do it ALL the time, just enough to irritate me! I don't know if it has anything to do with this problem, but if I go into control panel, add or remove programmes and click on Word 2000 SR-1, it says it is used rarely and the last time I used it was 26/11/01 - despite having used it five minutes ago. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks | write-click (2248) | |

2002-10-20 04:52:00 | Can you save your formatted document as a template? Then each time you use it it will expect a new name. If you "saved as" then the original date wouldn't have changed cause you didn't save the original.

2002-10-20 06:06:00 | Heather its not the document reporting the older date, its Windows saying the program itself has not been used for a long time. Thats what makes me wonder if its loaded twice, and the second copy is unused but stuffing up the one that is. A lon shot I know but worth a look.

To see if you have 2 copies of Word installed: - Start; Find; Files or Folders - Type in the "Named" box winword.exe - Change "Look in" to appropriate drives - starting with C: See how many copies appear. Templates are still a good idea. |

2002-10-21 05:11:00 | Thanks everyone, I was wondering myself if there were somehow two copies of Word loaded. Sometimes when I look in the Start menu it has Internet; Emil; Scanner; Mirascan and Word above a faint grey line, and below it is often another copy of Word, along with Photoshop; Norton Antivirus, Picture It and Publisher. I searched as you advised and found the following: Winword.exe-10D55173.pf in C:/Windows/Prefetch (85KB, PF File) and Winword C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office... (8605KB, Application). The prefetch one says date modified 21/10/02 whereas the application one says date modified 25/02/00 which was before I even bought my computer! (But it says it was accessed today.) In case you hadn't guessed by now, I'm not exactly a computer whiz, so does this mean I have two copies - and if so, can someone please tell me how to safely remove one - and which one?!! With regards to templates, how do I do this? I just tried saving a word document as a word template - but even when I saved it in the folder I had the original document in, when I opened it and tried to save it under another name, that annoying flashing orange box was back. Forgive me for being so inexperienced with Word - I find the online help menu a bit confusing - give me a manual any day! And please help! I'm sure someone can solve this annoying problem for me - or at least point me in the direction of someone who can. Thanks in anticipation. | write-click (2248) | |
2002-10-21 05:48:00 | Write-click hi, I have exactly the same thing happen too and I know what you mean about being annoying, but like you it doesn't happen all the time. I just did a test on mine of it and found if i opened word docs i had saved and tried to "save as" again the prob arose every doc i tried, however a new document save as was o.k. Strange eh. Another thing i checked on your list was the Word to make sure i didn't have 2 cause i had installed office xp with a newer version recently - but i have the same 2 entrys as you. Which was another thing i wondered cause i have installed a newer version but it still does it? What version is yours? Mine is Word 2002 but was Word 2000 SR 1 included in "m.s works suite 2001" - Which makes me wonder if it is specific to that Word as that is the one you use isn't it? Was yours in "works suite"? Also my computer is the same as yours Athlon 1600+ and using windows Xp. I know this isn't much help to you, but it is strange that we are both having the same prob and i previously had the same version Word as you have presumably.

2002-10-21 05:53:00 | Forgot to say - I had actually wondered if it did this as part of the program to warn/precaution you that you were changing a document or something, especially now i have realised it is only happening when i "save as" a previously saved doc????? Wonder about that - I know it sounds a bit silly:8} | J ZEP (336) | |
2002-10-21 06:33:00 | Hi J Zep, glad I'm not the only one! I bought my computer from the PC Company and it had Word already loaded as part of Works Suite - version 2000 SR-1 which means not a lot to me! I only encountered this problem after a 'friend' came around to clean out my unused files, etc! Previously I had used save-as all the time when editing documents so I would know which were the unedited drafts and which were the edited versions. I haven't done it yet (too scared until someone holds my hand and tells me it's okay!) but wondered if removing Word through 'add and remove programmes' and then reinstalling it was the answer. Until someone tells me to do that, I am a little reluctant! When Jess told me to do a repair, I just clicked on 'change' then 'repair' rather than removing and reinstalling - maybe that didn't help? With regard to the warning about saving as something else, I think Microsoft would probably have one of those annoying little boxes that pops up to tell you this! Whatever it is, I am getting heartily sick of it because I use save-as almost every day and I want this to go away! I'm sure someone out there with a few clues who has encountered this before and stopped it from ever happening again - where are you?!! | write-click (2248) | |
2002-10-21 06:42:00 | If you are running Word 2002 (or Office XP) then you need to apply the update from April 25th 2002 see Word2002_Update (support.microsoft.com) There may be other updates you should apply to your Office products... if so go to Office_Updates (office.microsoft.com) Cheers, Babe.
