91469 2002-10-21 10:56:00 I have a Pentium II 300 running win98.
The boot sequence seems to go to sleep for over 2 minutes and then proceeds to open the desktop.
Can anyone suggest a fix to make it boot in the usual way
Thanks

91470 2002-10-21 11:03:00 Check your system setup. It sounds like its wanting to log onto a network or looking for a DCHP server and timing out.

Sorry I dont have Win 98 so cant tell you exactly where to look, but someone will surely do so.

91471 2002-10-21 11:11:00 Hmm . . time for another FAQ . . .

click Start -> Run

type:

MSCONFIG

You'll see a window pop open with some tabs .

Click the one marked 'start-up' and then take the tick out of things you know you don't need .

If you are not sure if you need something or not, try unticking it . If a piece of hardware stops working, or software that you want running stops loading then put the tick back . No harm in trying . Suggest you do try only one thing at a time to make troubleshooting easier .

Also, theoretically, you do not need anything ticked at all .

Next go to the 'autoexec . bat' tab and to the same there, but exercise caution .

This is presuming that you run Scandisk and Disk Defrag regularly . If not, do that too, it may help .

91472 2002-10-21 21:05:00 Hi there do u have a network card installed that is probably the problem.

I had the same problem as i sometimes hook my laptop to my desktop but since it's soooo occasionally i disable the network adapter in the system properties (just tick the box) and everything works a dream. Then when i need it again I just untick the box and reboot.

Hope that's of some help

Try giving it an IP address or disable it in the device manager if you don't use it.

91474 2002-10-22 04:05:00 Thanks guys
It was a built in network adapter. Disabling it gave the desired result.
