91401 2002-10-21 10:12:00 For the past 4 or so years I have emailed a mate in Brunei (brunet.bn) with no trouble.

For the past month I have had real difficulty getting through with email. I get his, he doesn't get mine. I use xtra as IS provider. I was getting mail bounced, but even that does not happen now. Mail just seems to disappear.

I have used Opera 6.04, Netscape 4.7 and a Yahoo account (which will occasionally get through).

I have tried to get delivery messages via Netscape but without success.

Any help would be appreciated.

91402 2002-10-21 10:17:00 How you send them is of little import, its most likely his ISP may be blocking Xtra for some reason.

This happened to us a while back, where a small ISP in USA was blocking Xtra emails due to "potential open relay" which translates to a risk unscrupulous people could use Xtra to send spam. Xtra blocked open relay years ago.

Eventually it came right.

The answer is to open a free email address at Yahoo, Hotmail or some other web based provider. Try sending from that.

91403 2002-10-21 10:31:00 Thanks for suggestion.

Xtra told me they would make noises to cure the problem about three weeks ago - no change.

My Yahoo free account is also "blocked or lost" on some occasions

91404 2002-10-21 10:42:00 In truth Xtra can probably do little about it.

You may have better luck if you both use Yahoo or similar, that cuts out the POP3 email and its less likely to be dropped or bounced. Bit of a pain to use though.

91405 2002-10-21 16:35:00 Get your friend in BT to approach his ISP and enquire at his end. It could be something fairly harmless and as a result your messages are getting blocked unknowling, more likely the ISP has received complaints of spamming or / and virus's via xtra.

If possible try sending a message to him/her from another computer using a different isp. That could help to narrow it down to whether they are blocking xtra or not.

91406 2002-10-21 20:21:00 Use any web based email you have to re-establish contact.
This bypasses smtp.xtra.co.nz who may or may not be banned. (see Gods post above)

Of course the problem may be that brunei has closed his account or some such. When the email bounced, what kind of messages did the bounce notices have?

"User unknown" would suggest that brunei aint there no more.

Brunei might also be using mailwasher, if the "bounces" took less than a few minutes, the latter could be the case.

91407 2002-10-21 20:30:00 Get your friend to use a yahoo account - can still be downloaded via pop3, but it will ignore any blacklisting by the ISP, as it's bypassing the ISPs mail server.

91408 2002-10-22 00:04:00 Thanks for the posts.

I am getting his email ( ex brunet.bn) without problem, so it does seem as though xtra is being blocked.

The bounced mail referred to "unknown sender"

Have made contact via Yahoo on occasions but mail is not always getting there either!

He will attempt to contact his ISP and see if there is a problem such as spam/virus reported from xtra. This may fix the problem

Again Press F1 helps the computer user. Well done

91409 2002-10-22 00:12:00 >The bounced mail referred to "unknown sender"

The only time i see that error is when my own domain name is not recognised usually dues to interspeeds DNS server being down

I am assuming that the email address you are using is an "@xtra.co.nz" one, so i find it unlikely that a domain like that would be "unknown"

Send me a failure notice...I'm curious

91410 2002-10-22 03:09:00 Hi Pugwash

Sorry, the last mail that bounced was about two weeks ago and I deleted. Since then the mail just disappears - no bounce and no delivery!

Is there anyone else out there using xtra to get to Brunei - problems or clear running?

Thanks
