91509 2002-10-22 05:15:00 Okay Billy T..... I just RTFM :8} and it says

This feature requires Microsoft Exchange. In addition, your administrator must have enabled this feature on Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 or later.

Doesn't explain why the file doesn't shrink when the deleted items folder is emptied however.

91510 2002-10-22 05:38:00 I believe the mail is stored in a database. Deleting an item just causes the index entry to it to be removed. This saves a lot of disk activity, at the cost of space. So the actual email is still there, and can be read with a number of methods. (It's not hard to read a database file and create an index to it ... it's even easier to scan through, reading the information, without accessing the real index :D).

If you have an option to compress the database, that will remove any which have been deleted, and the file size should reduce. ;-)

91511 2002-10-22 06:16:00 So the correct answer is - reformat?

91512 2002-10-22 08:41:00 No, just delete Outlook .pst and create a new empty .pst file.

There's a bit more work for Outlook Express but the same principles apply.

91514 2002-10-22 08:59:00 jeessh, that's a bit drastic... I just compact my PST files from Outlook.

Right-click on the personal folder within Outlook, Properties, Advanced, Compact Now (include the tick in the "Allow upgrade to large tables as well)

91516 2002-10-25 02:38:00 Thanks Billy. Can one erase the .pst file with appropriate software? Jonw (2311)
91517 2002-10-25 02:50:00 Outlook wont run with the outlook.pst file so how do you create a new
empty .pst file ?
Jonw (2311)
91518 2002-10-25 02:58:00 Jonw,

Delete or rename your OLD Outlook.Pst file, and then startup OUTLOOK

When the message box The file {pathto}outlook.pst could not be found appears - Click OK

In the Create/Open Personal Folders File window {you can use the default name OUTLOOK.PST} click OPEN

In the Create Microsoft Personal Folders window select your encryption level (None, Compressible, Best) probably DONT want to set a password (in case you forget it) and press OK

If you get a message regarding "The location messages are delivered to..." etc then click YES

And that it.
