91499 2002-10-22 01:35:00 Running Microsoft Outlook on Win XP how to permamently erase emails? Jonw (2311)
91500 2002-10-22 01:48:00 Hold down shift and press the Delete key on your keyboard. Or alternatively, just delete them normally, then go into the "deleted items" folder in outlook, and delete them from out of there.

91502 2002-10-22 03:40:00 Just musing on the wicked and wilful ways of Microsoft: ]:)

How do we know that deleting them actually removes the message completely from Outlook.pst ?:|

I've noticed that this file grows steadily in size, but never seems to shrink when I delete emails. Makes me curiouser & curiouser and I'd be interested to know if anyone has the answer.

91503 2002-10-22 03:58:00 I don't think they are really deleted until you do a compact in the Clean Up section. (Outlook Express anyway!)
As there are programs around that can get back deleted emails (well, what you thought were deleted!)

91504 2002-10-22 04:23:00 I read on the forum that when you delete from your deleted email folder, they appear deleted, but actually they are not.......

Someone else may know more

91505 2002-10-22 04:34:00 When you delete items from Outlook's deleted items folder, they go into an "even more deleted" ;\ items folder! You can see this if you go to the deleted items folder, then select Tools | Recover Deleted Items.... Once the list is displayed, you have the option to delete again!!!! If you are lucky, that delete will actually make it go away.......

91506 2002-10-22 04:35:00 AFAIK, deleting via SHIFT-Delete, bypasses the recoverable deleted deleted items folder, but I may be wrong there.

91507 2002-10-22 05:05:00 Hmmmm

Well MS, I am using Outlook 2000 but I can't find any "recover deleted files" option after deleting from the Deleted Items folder. There is no problem restoring from the Deleted Items folder however, as you would expect.

What is the exact path to this "Deep Throat" recovery option Steve?

91508 2002-10-22 05:09:00 You need to have the deleted items folder open. Then select "Tools" and you should see "Recover Deleted Items... about halfway down the list. I am currently using Outlook 2002, but have only been using it for a few weeks. That option was always available in Outlook 2000.
