91351 2002-10-21 07:15:00 The registry is usually kept in a file like user.dat or something. Not much you can do without Regedit.

91352 2002-10-21 08:01:00 What about a third-party registry editor, won't that do the job? Check out the registry FAQ for a link. Susan B (19)

Not quite sure what you're trying ... have you tried using REGEDT32 instead. Or maybe post back here with an example of what it is you would like to do, maybe I can help?

Cheers, Babe.

91354 2002-10-21 19:26:00 Babe:

liam has sent me a copy of a bootable disk that you can use to change passwords in w2k. Now as it happens I have a friends w2k box which was causing some grief and of course the administrators password has been forgotten. The bootable disk want to know the correct registry path so it can change the password. Hence the question of where the actual file lives.

Morning... is this looking for the SAM and other system registry hives? if so then the path for WIN2K would be %systemroot%\system32\config e.g. C:\WINNT\system32\config or wherever the Windows 2000 system lives.

try that and post back.

Cheers, Babe.

91356 2002-10-22 00:45:00 Babe;

Yeah you're right. Does that mean the file are .idf?
There are only 3 files in \config all .idf and opening them with notepad reveals seemingly unrelated info. [general.idf, hindered.idf, msadlib.idf]

btw what is SAM?
