2002-10-23 01:45:00 | Microsoft's turn to upset me now. I started to download SP1 for Windows XP, then I saw how big it was and stopped. Their US site stated that it could be supplied on CD for $US 10 - but only to US customers. OK I thought, I'll call MS here in NZ. This was a few weeks ago and it hadn't been released here, but friendly lady took my number and said they'd phone me when it was available. I asked what it was likely to cost and she said she thought it would be free. So I waited for the call, and waited and waited. I called the this morning and said 'hey, when are you getting the CDs?" He said the ones they got in had been sent out and the were waiting for some more. (Thanks for the call, Microsoft) But he could order one for me, It will cost just $49.95! Sorry, Bill Gates, but tho me this seems a bit high just for sticking a CD in the post.

Once its in the list of downloads, you can schedule it to go through that night while you're sound asleep! Just a though, It's free, which'd solve your money problems :) Cheers |

2002-10-23 02:32:00 | Hi Chilling Silence. Yeah I thought about downloading it overnight. But then I thought this is supposed to be a free 'fix' so why does it cost so much - it's a principle at stake here. Having been closely looking at the Consumer Gaurantees Act recently for something else it occured to me that SP1 is designed to fix problems with WinXP. Therefore WinXP breaches the act in 2 places: 1. Be of acceptable quality. 2. Be fit for their particular purpose. So, come on Microsoft, send us CDs at cost. I don't even mind is Bill makes a dollar on each one - how many million copies of XP have they sold? But they're taking the p*** here

2002-10-23 03:42:00 | Geez, $49...............I can remember when I was using plain old Win98 and the upgrade to 98SE came out, I was still in NZ then and ordered that through Auckland, including postage it was only $30, one computer. If you wait a wee while maybe the SP1 upgrade will be included on a PCWorld magazine CD or someone will be able to loan you there SP1 CD. | duckyduck (197) | |
2002-10-23 03:50:00 | crozier, MS is based in the US. They're not covered by the the CGA unless we can do it to the NZ representatives or something. Maybe another member where you are could drop it round. I could post it if need be.

2002-10-23 03:53:00 | Re the CGA: >1. Be of acceptable quality. So, the SP1 adds some "features" (bug fixes). Are you saying the quality was not acceptable before. Mine ran just fine than you... >2. Be fit for their particular purpose. Again you need to prove it didnt run, didnt work correctly, or will not continue to run if you dont apply the pack. You should read the EULA as well....

2002-10-23 03:54:00 | Hi Duckyduck, I guess we've all spent a lot over the years on Windows OS's: Win95 about $200 Win98 about $230 Update to Win98SE $30 Upgrade to WinME about $130 Windows XP Pro Upgrade about $500 Then there MS Office about $700, Age of Empire (4 versions) about $350 plus Age of Mythology which I've just preordered from Dick Smiths. And Flightsim etc etc etc...... How come I don't qualify for free shares in Microsoft. Where's that Linux CD I got on a mag a while ago.......
