91666 2002-10-22 07:18:00 Me and my father have purchased me a rather good computer, IMHO, it is called the "Alienware Aurora DDR" and is the green one, possibly "cyborg green". I had to order it off the internet it arrived this morning.

I will be using it mainly for emails and possibly chess, and will only need windows 95 (It came with windows XP pro but I dont want that I want 95 because it will be fast, i had NO option to choose 95!) so I would like to know where I could download: A writing program, similar to word but simpler, a chess program and Windows 95. I do not condone wares so only freeware please, and as for 95 please specify a link to a webdite to PURCHASE it thank you.

91667 2002-10-22 07:26:00 Check the PCWorld CD disks for a Office program called I think Star Office, that is free. If you don'e have the disks maybe one of the other F1'ers will have the disks and be able to dig it out and either copy it for you or lend it to you.

As for Win95, try Buy Sale Exchange or Cash Converters, any shops in your area that sell computer gear including second hand shops.

Maybe one of the other F1'ers will have a old win95 disk that they will sell you or give away to you. Worth asking.

91668 2002-10-22 07:46:00 i'd suggest openoffice.org for a freeware alternative to ms office. it's a complete suite, so you get a word precessor, spreadsheet, etc. www.openoffice.org

probably buy win95 cheap from www.trademe.co.nz, but personally i'd go for win98se over 95.

as for most of your other freeware needs, there are tonnes of sites around, i use www.download.com quite often, you can filter search results to only return freeware, look at the bottom of the page after you do a search...

91669 2002-10-22 07:52:00 Cant understand why you would want to go back to w95 it wont be any faster. Its like been given a Porsche and swapping it for a Lada.

91671 2002-10-22 08:04:00 Being a curious sort of person, I did a search on your new PC ...

"Alienware systems are built for devoted gamers, and the purple-and-black Aurora we tested is no exception.

With AMD's 1.8-GHz Athlon XP 2200+ processor and a gigabyte of DDR SDRAM, our Alienware netted a score of 123 on PC WorldBench 4 tests. It came in a point shy of a previous Aurora DDR we reviewed that had a slightly slower CPU and only half as much RAM; nevertheless, this model still ranks among the fastest systems we've tested."

Why did you buy a gamers machine for email and chess? You don't want to knee-cap this PC with Win95 (or is it compatibility issues you are concerned with?).

Sorry - I don't mean to offend you on your choice of software and PC, I am just curious.

Jen :)

91672 2002-10-22 08:07:00 Hi...

Try Abiword (search under Google or similar), which is free and strikingly similar to Microsoft Word. It is comprohensive and still under development - I think....

Cheers

91673 2002-10-22 09:00:00 Its entirely possible that you may not find drivers for your motherboard that work correctly under windows 95 .

More likely under windows 98 perhaps .

I have used all versions of windows and find XP to be the most stable system yet .

91674 2002-10-22 09:22:00 y go back to windows 95? isn't XP good enough?:D i only have a windows 98 cd, if u want that, just email me, from my profile address.
i did a search (www.google.co.nz) on ur request for downloading windows 95, i'm not sure if there were any good results, but still worth the time to look at, just incase.

cheers,

91675 2002-10-22 09:24:00 thanks "www.openoffice.org" seems good. And I MAY stick with Windows XP, as long as it works fast because I only have 512 MEGS of ram! My friend said he has a seagate 20 gig! So I feel maybe 512 is too small. I have not run into any problems so far with XP, seems fast enough but maybe it will conker out when I install some programs? I do not belive it is possible to download ram is it, and if so, is it illegal?

Yes ALIENWARE.COM said it was a gamers platform but chess is the only game I like! This is my first computer but I have used the school ones countless times (they are 98) so yes.
