92040 2002-10-24 03:43:00 On this topic, my flatmate's old HD was noisy as (kind of a grunting noise), but only when it was being accessed. He bought a new drive as the old one eventually got too small, and I put his old one in my machine - the noise stopped. His new drive makes this same noise, but it is different in pitch and noway near as loud, but still clearly audible. The original drive made the noise from new. It is not a fan or anything obvious like that. Is it possible that the way the IDE controller for his mobo (or similar) would access the disk in such a way to cause the noise???

92041 2002-10-24 04:16:00 A mate’s got a HP computer (ex Noel Leming) and fair go I’ve heard concrete mixers make less noise! However, the damn thing is about 5 years old now and still has no bad sectors.

So, for my pennies worth Beef I’d run scandisk in thorough mode and see if there are any bad sectors reported.

If not, I’d get a second opinion as time permitted unless it is under warranty and time is running out.

If however there are a number of bad sectors reported, time is of the essence to get your data onto another storage medium.

Let’s know how you get on.

92042 2002-10-24 04:43:00 I had a mates xp box play up and eventually it trashed it's registry. So no Boot. Once I got it going again and did the customary 'take the lid off and inspect the Fans, Heatsinks.....' I realised the Hd was only screws in with 2 screws on one side. I suspect then that the vibration of the HD as it was being accessed jogged the read/write heads and corrupted the file. Putting another two screws on the other side made the system quieter too when the HD was being accessed.

92043 2002-10-24 08:34:00 yes yes, I intend on scandisk tonight. and then I will Defrag during the day while I am at school. Beef (1415)

I hope you can distinguish the noise.

92045 2002-10-24 21:00:00 Beef, that certainly is a very fine recording of a whirrrrrrring noise, which could be any one of a couple of fans (unless you have one of those factory air-conditioning systems disguised as a computer) or the Hard Disk . Must say I admire your ingenuity recording the noise .
The only noise I could distinguish was the Power Supply fan, but then that’s not surprising is it?

So much for the guessing game, what was the outcome of Scandisk (Thorough) and Defrag?

I personally think the best advice is that of Graham L & your Mother .

If it’s a warranty job and you indicate it is, then take it back and let them sort it out .

Question for the rest of the team out there .

Should we not be able to power the Hard Drive down without removing the cover? Sleep Mode or something? Just a thought for checking if the noise is the HDD .

92046 2002-10-25 02:36:00 Well scandisk returned with no errors or bad sectors .

I didn't get around to defrag, mum was going to take Computer into today but I said no cause our relatives are coming up and there is nothing to do on this boring farm .

So mum will take it on Tuesday .

Nah its not the Power supply fan, that is the hard drive .

RF interference with the Mic an all makes quality sh#t

That is very good idea, I will go into power management and try the turn off hard disks option .

Anyway, thanks y'all for the help and feedback .

92047 2002-10-25 07:53:00 I checked my noisy harddrive with the HP help line, (who are always very helpful), and he listened to it over the phone. He told me the noise 'was just harddrive activity'. and there was nothing wrong. So some harddrives are apparantly designed noisy. ssssss (2100)
92048 2002-10-25 09:34:00 Arrh well, we're still going to take it in on Tuesday to get a check up and hopefully another hard drive. 40 gig.
my 20 gig has about 1.3 gigs left on it.
2 partitions. 10 gig each.
