2002-10-23 18:18:00 | :( I can't go into my computer, it still has a warrantee and my mother is being stubborn. But at the moment it isn't making the noise, because I shutdown and then booteds up again.

2002-10-23 18:32:00 | DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR HARDRIVE My friend had a hardrive, a 40gb and when his started making the same noise as yours, he chucked it in the dump (he didnt have receipt or nuthin) and baugh a new one. When he installed the new one, TA-DA: the same noise! Turned out it as his FAN that was a few cm away from it. Try putting another hardrive instead of yours (like a mates) and see if its the fan or not.

2002-10-23 19:32:00 | Ok heres my theory on that sound you are hearing. I'm no expert on the meachanics of hard-drives but the sound that i can hear from your mp3 would suggest that some sort of bearings have worn out. Thats indicated by the whirrling sound. Minor click sounds from the hard-drive are ok, then there are bad clicks which are a bit louder, i couldn't really distinguish the clicks in your MP3. Now the only way you are gonna know if its your harddrive is by taking off the cover (while your mother is out) This will not void the warranty. So take it off and listen to where the sound is coming from, because like other people have said it could be your PSU fan your chasiss fan or your CPU fan. The only way to tell is by taking off the covers.

You went inside the case of your Alienware computer after two days to tidy the cables up and vacuum the inside. Are you in laalaa land ? You obviously need to take your meds dude...... |

2002-10-23 21:59:00 | I have never had a warranty that precluded opening the case. The risk you run, is that if whatever you did caused a problem then that problem is not covered by warranty. I read a recent PC World article on warranties on the PC Company units, where the manufacturers also said it was OK to open the case. PCs I have owned have even included instructions on fitting extra RAM etc, and how to open the case. I have done so, and accept that if I cause the problem, its my problem. If you accept the view that you cannot open the case, then I assume you have not loaded any extra software as well...if you follow the logic. If you (for instance) open the case and fit a second hard drive, and later the RAM died, then provided you had not physically damaged the RAM when installing the HDD, it would still be covered by warranty. Anything you add is not covered by that warranty, but is covered by any warranty that came with the actual device. Don't be paranoid, act sensibly and warranties will cover what they are intended to. They should not stop normal activities however.

2002-10-24 03:15:00 | It is irrelevant whether a warranty allows opening the box or not. These legal experts don't live with your mother. ;-) If the computer is new enough to be under warranty, AND there is a distressing noise, AND there is a local prohibition on opening the box, then ... TAKE IT IN TO THE SHOP AND GET THEIR OPINION OF THE NOISE. If it's failing, you will lose any information you have on the disk when it dies.
