92021 2002-10-23 07:05:00 I got a whole new motherboard in january, new CPU fans etc 300 w power supply. yadadada.

My old hard drive used to that when it was starting up. It took about 3 or so minutes to die down.

92022 2002-10-23 07:52:00 oh yes, the 20 gig was still used from the upgrade I had to it is about . . 1 - 3 yrs old .

Okay, I shut the computer down for about 2 minutes, starts up boots okay yadada .

No noise whatsoever except the usual hum of the fan and hdd, I think .

But usually my computer is left turned on days at a time, Overheating of the Hard Drive maybe?

When I goto BIOS and check the pc health checker it is only at 23 degrees at the cpu etc .

Possible hard drive failure .

Oh yes and my local service provider came back with some better deals . (I told him I had been looking around at competive prices)

92024 2002-10-23 08:14:00 My hdd makes a grunting noise when booting and at other times. I always thought it was normal, since it has been doing it for 2 years since new.
It is an HP.
However another question. If one adds a second hard drive to one's computer, does it slow the computer down much?
ssssss (2100)
92025 2002-10-23 08:19:00 depends.

If you used a new hard drive and it was using serial instead of parallel that would speed your computer up quite remarkably. Correct me if I'm wrong.

so what do you guys think about the .mp3?

92026 2002-10-23 08:32:00 >If one adds a second hard drive to one's computer, does it slow the computer down much?

no. if you install a faster hardrive and run your programs off that it will be faster. also make sure you have a spare ide connection and a drive bay to mount it in.

>and it was using serial instead of parallel that would speed your computer up quite remarkably

errr.....no. if you are thinking of the new serial drives (not sure if you can actually buy them yet) it wouldn't make any difference speed wise. current hardrives are to slow to make use of the 150MB/s speed of the serial bus.

92027 2002-10-23 08:43:00 I have had this problem before, a couple of months after that my hard drive stopped working, i would recommend you get a new hard drive and back up all your valuable data. Be prepared for the worst. Chao is back (634)
92028 2002-10-23 09:17:00 Dear me.

I will get mother to take the computer in A.S.A.P and tell her to get a new hard drive. hopefully it is still under warrantee. (hard drive)

92029 2002-10-23 09:28:00 can you do a lot clearer recording of the noise. suggest putting something solid against drive and mic eg screwdriver (don't damage anything ;-)) and record it. tweak'e (174)
