92010 2002-10-23 02:37:00 Hi i have a 20 gig seagate hard drive I think

and currently it is creating a lot of noise, even when it is not loading or doing anything .

It is constant most of the time .

Sometimes it does pulsing noises .

is this a sign of HDD failure?

92011 2002-10-23 02:42:00 Disks should not make noises ... loud ones, anyway. A quiet hum, perhaps. ;-)

If you are not sure, get it in (just the computer box) to a service place, and ask them. Don't ask them for an opinion on the basis of a description. Do it soon.

92014 2002-10-23 04:02:00 have u got a url for that recording?

if its just light clicking it could just be seeking noise. you might just be in need of a defrag.

92015 2002-10-23 04:13:00 "a lot of noise, even when it is not loading or doing anything". I'd turn it off, and take it to someone who knows, rather than using it. A clicking noise could be a head belting the surface of a warped platter. :-( Graham L (2)
92016 2002-10-23 04:21:00 to true graham. mind you i have heard a lot of noisy seagates (almost all have been HP pc's) and none of them have deid (yet)(oldest one is 2years old) tweak'e (174)
92017 2002-10-23 04:35:00 If this is the drive referred to in yesterday's thread "Price for 20 gig drive", I would suspect something is wrong with it. But I can't hear it in Christchurch, and I prefer to advise a cautious approach. It's sometimes better to investigate before the smoke comes out. Graham L (2)
