| 91796 | 2002-10-22 12:17:00 | Does anyone know of a GPS unit that attaches to the Compaq Ipaq 3660? I have seen a few units here in Japan, however I am interested in hearing from someone who may have actually used one, to see how good they actually are. Thanks for any help on this matter. |

I have played with one device very briefly, but given that I can't remember the model let alone much else that doesn't help much. How good they are depends on what you want it for. I saw some people from Nokia using one that worked with a GSM card in a notebook about six years ago where they drove around and it plotted cellphone signal strength against locations. Did it very well but the software was a cow to maintain. Any clues on what you want it for? robo. |

| 91798 | 2002-10-23 23:44:00 | I want it so I can track My way around Tokyo. i am here for a year and have been looking at all ideas of GPS over here. The car mapping system here is absolutely perfect. It even recalculates if you go a different way that it suggests and shows the roads to avoid due to heavy traffic. only problem is that i wont be Buying a car here..... Another option is the Mobile Phones. There is a New one on the market that runs on the CDMA 1 network that has GPS function. I have had a play with this already. the only problems with this is that It is only in Japanese, and It costs 20yen per page that you view. There is about 5000 pages for Tokyo alone! (cool part is that its all in colour) So i come back to My Ipaq. i already have the device. All i need is the GPS unit, and to download the maps... Sounds easy, but there are so many GPS units available... So any help woiuld be appreciated... :) Thanks Brian |

However, another option is to have a handheld device (for $250-$500 or so) and connect that to your Compaq. I have a close friend who I work with who has just finished a research project testing the limitations and costs associated with handheld GPS, and has used an Ipaq with a GPS receiver. Email me at gwpetrie at varsity dot co dot nz and I will pass his email address on to you. he will be happy to help. G P |
