2002-10-22 08:00:00 | I've just installed Winfax pro v 8.03 with Talkworks(answerphone) and cannot seem to get any decent quality sound out of it. I've recorded a greeting message that is barely disernable over the background noise and the messages that are left are of equally bad quality. So I figure its not my cheap microphone and probably something to do with the soundcard, a Soundblaster Pro 16 I have had another similar program with no sound problems(it just failed to pickup faxes too often). I downloaded a driver and installed that but no difference. I've checked out the manual but not much help there. Anyone got any ideas??

Close down all other apps including virus checkers and firewalls. Try it then. Even go to safe mode and see if it works OK. (if it works at all, but an older app like that may work). If it does, you problem may relate to software interfering with the sound card IRQ's |

2002-10-22 09:27:00 | Hello Rod ger I had a similar problem it was the recording level in windows I had to set it up high so I could record. Also have you tried the audio editor that comes with winfax to do the recording then select the out going message from where you save the message file. or even try windows recorder to test the soundcard to see if this is at fault. will have a think and come back to you Ro Ger

2002-10-22 10:07:00 | Hi Ro Ger( Are we related????) I had played around with the Windows recorder and volume controls, but have done so systematically now. I seem to be able to get only a marginally better recording on the Windows recorder, which seems to respond better to the volume control level being set lower. The Winfax recorder has similar results to the panel where you record the greeting message( no improvement). There seems to be some compression involved in the Winfax process plus an automatic sound level adjustment. Because the Windows recorder is also noisey I am inclined to think it maybe a sound card setting that I don't know about. There are no conflicts or shared IRQ's

2002-10-23 08:57:00 | Are you using a mic connected to the sound card,or to the modem,or you can actually use your phone to record the message. You can select the type of recording device from the Talkworks "Devices" tab.Try each one to see which is best. Peter

2002-10-23 09:12:00 | Hi Peter, Unfortunatley the modem has'nt got a phone input, stuck with the microphone. The funny thing is the recorded messages(through the modem) are as bad as the mic. recorded ones, I think it may be somthing to do with the sound card. But what!

2002-10-24 20:58:00 | Hi Rod ger,I'm not sure, but I don't think the phone has to plugged into the modem.I did it a long time ago and I think I used a phone that was just plugged into a double adapter, but I can't remember now,and I have Winfax 8 but I no longer use Talkworks, and so didn't install it last time I reformatted.Try it and see, although I may be wrong(I was once,10 years ago so my wife tells me) Peter
