92317 2002-10-23 23:22:00 is there any program I can use to download Acorn Archimedes Floppies
to windows 98SE?

92318 2002-10-24 02:45:00 The A4000 I had a play with could read MSDOS floppies without any problems, and I seem to remember that RISCOS can write them too.

Have you got the disks and not the computer?

92319 2002-10-24 04:01:00 You got me curious ... "arcimg" to google will find you some links. This one: acorn.revivalteam.de looks hopeful. Graham L (2)
92320 2002-10-24 04:32:00 wot exactly is "Acorn Archimedes "? vk_dre (195)
92321 2002-10-24 04:41:00 It's a computer ... actually a computer I plugged in today at an auction is an Acorn A4000 computer, which contains an Archimedes CPU. It runs the RISCOS OS. They were very popular in the UK, because they were made there, and was very strong on educational uses. There were quite a few used in NZ in schools too, but cost and MS beat them. The company has gone now, but there are a couple of magazines, because of the many people who like them. The same company made the BBC computers. The Archimedes design is still used ... DEC took it over ... that's what the ARM chip in some of the palmtop computers is. Graham L (2)
92322 2002-10-24 04:58:00 They were cool computers. They were running at 13MIPS when the 286 was king. A few die hards still keep going like here:

The OS was a full GUI with font antialiasing which is still better than XP Cleartype. The whole OS fit into 4 MB of ROM IIRC.
The RISC PC had two CPU slots so you could run Windows in a window running native code on an x86 processor in the second slot. I would love to see what it would have evolved into had it had the support the PC does. You could code quick multitasking GUI Apps using SWIs (like APIs) from BBC BASIC. You could mix and match assembly language with your BASIC code.
This is what RISC OS looks like now:
