92189 2002-10-23 17:01:00 Has anybody else had fatal exceptions and noticed ?

A couple of weeks ago my windows 98se was working great, then each night for a week or so I would get at least one fatal exception a day, without doing anything I can think would fix the problem, I have not seen any for almost a week or so now,

I think I have a suspect, but don't wish to point the finger too quickly as I am not always correct, I was hoping someone else reading this posting might jump to the same conclusion as me.

92190 2002-10-23 19:37:00 Well the fact that we don't have the same PC as you nor the same configuration, how can you expect us to ge errors at the same time?

Fatal exceptions are caused when programmes step on each others toes or its own toes. Commonly they can be traced back to 1 programme. An error will say ???? has caused a fatal exception in ?????
have a read of that, and get back to us

p.s. if you suspect something, then run it, try and trigger it. How else will you learn?

92191 2002-10-23 19:58:00 I get about one a fortnight. Only on one prog and site. PRESS F1 - when I click on a topic up comes the blue screen - no other sites - no other progs. Pressing the "any other key" reverts to semi-normal, but appears to slow all down, so normally reboot. Anyone else experienced this on F1 ?

92193 2002-10-23 20:09:00 Hi there BSODers

Win98 original, 192MB, P166, newish hard drives, BSOD about once every 4-6 weeks, no pattern, not F1, reboot restores normal operation.
I have a fairly full load of programs aboard but not much running most of the time, only 10 in the task window and 22 in sysinfo running tasks.

I turn off every night and restart in the morning. I wonder if that helps.

Cheers

92194 2002-10-23 20:19:00 Yes, reseting the computer, will lower the chances of getting fatal exception, as it clears out the memmory banks, hence less unlikey for one of of the programmes to step on someone elses toes.
Fatal exceptions caused by hardware usually result from faulty ram, which sometimes isn't the ram's fault but rather the settings for it in the BIOS.

92195 2002-10-23 23:39:00 This page (www.infinisource.com) gives links to MS Knowledge Base on fatal exeptions. The other big cause apart from hardware seems to be related to vxd device drivers. Used to get one at odd times with InCd.vxd Terry Porritt (14)
92196 2002-10-24 01:28:00 Running Win98 on P266 32mb ram, various software (including stuff with minimum specs for a far more power PC) and no BSOD or crash for a very long time.

My secret: reformat every 3-6 months, no AV or firewall, and no programs running at start-up, and I only run IE when necessary (use Opera as default browser).

92197 2002-10-24 02:38:00 When the new forum started my occasional BSODs also started, usually when I had a good handful of IE windows open on posts. I used to sometimes get one every night and would have to reboot because it locked up my internet connection. Now, however, it's much less frequent fortunately.

The most annoying part is that if I click on OK or Cancel or whatever in the dialogue box all the windows close and I lose everything I haven't yet read. What I do now is shift the box around so I can read things and only click the OK button when I've finished it all.

It is definitely Press F1 that does it and I have no idea why. No other sites give me the same problem.

92198 2002-10-24 04:29:00 Thanks for the back up Susan. I have only ever had this problem on Press F1. System is W98se, Duron 1000, only used for mail & web browsing + Word processing. Formatted & installed in July. New M/B & cpu was reason for this. Soltek SL-75KAV
