92159 2002-10-23 08:51:00 What type of motherboards are there? There's ATX, Micro ATX and is Small Factor the 3rd one? I am liking the slimmer computer cases and not into overclocking, heaps of drive bays, cards etc... just wanna capable system for few games, dvd, internet, network, modem, ADSL. One FDD, DVD, HDD. Ethernet, modem, maybe wireless LAN too.

The cpu's if not lagging behind that much is ok. Prices if not too much diff is ok too, doh upgrade that often, if I do tend to replace parts than add more to the current system.

I am thinking of getting a IBM Netvista case (auction or somehow) and build it up w/ parts obtained locally. I know IBM desktops parts sux. To partner it with my IBM Thinkpad (the best laptops I think). Again I stress into a bit of gaming, DVD, mostly MS Office, internet, email, chatting (MSN, ICQ, Netmeeting) and oddly editing video and picture, photography running Adobe (planned). Will normally upgrade CPU like only when painfully slow. Like a AGP slot too, so I can change v-card much easier (i suppose micro atx cant do this?).

92160 2002-10-23 09:36:00 microATX mobos general are cheaper workstation type boards eg have onboard graphics etc. not to good if you want to play games and want an AGP slot. also they only have a few pci slots so they can be limited for adding in cards (modems, lans cards, sound cards etc).

be aware slimline cases can be a major pain as you need to get half height cards which are not easy to get. i've had a few wher to add in a new card i had to replace the whole case.

92161 2002-10-23 10:10:00 thanx jus a few questions

I know M-ATX, is right out since I need AGP.

possible to get AGP for Small Form types?? this is a type separate to Micro ATX and ATX??

Does local sourced mobos fit ok into Netvista/Intellistation cases?

don't know of this one.

no idea. the trouble with some brand name pc's (eg compaq etc) is they fit only their own motherboard. can you find a link to a pic or specs?

92163 2002-10-23 20:58:00 Hi tweake,
Its called Small Form Factor.

I have sourced some help. This I think is industry Micro ATX: there is a link to the Micro ATX Soyo motherboard. This is not what I am after since no AGP.

Don't know what it is ... is called SMALL FORM FACTOR. Has 1 AGP, 3 PCI.

I do not need ADSL. Other PC would have in house. This I intend to have AGP graphics, one FDD, HDD, CD/DVD. NO CDRW - other PC have. Perhaps modem, ethernet, wireless LAN, TV tuner (jus maybe), sound thus ... (upto 1 AGP, 5 PCI). Well if I do run out, I will get the normal tower case by IBM Netvista/Intellistation.

The most impt Q is, the last point a industry standard board. No big deal if not, I just get the normal tower instead.

92166 2002-10-23 21:18:00 I just put togethe a PC with a Gigabyte G-Max case and motherboard for my sister.
It has a Flex ATX board with AGP slot and also came with a Radeon 32MB 4x AGP half-height card.
Also has a floppy drive, 52x CD-ROM and optical mouse to match the colour of the case!

Check it out here (www.bdt.co.nz)

All you need to add is HDD, RAM and CPU.

92167 2002-10-23 22:09:00 i personally hate the slimline pcs as they are a nightmare to upgrade (and repair)

i would suggest sticking to a standard size cases and mobo's.

92168 2002-10-23 22:39:00 Also check out these little PC's. They take a standard AGP card!!
