Cray to use 10,000 Opteron processors for new super computer
AMD has announced that their new Opteron processor is to be used by Cray in producing a new super computer for nuclear simulations making it second only to the Earth Simulator. Here's part of AMD's announcement:
SUNNYVALE, CA -- October 21, 2002 --AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced the upcoming AMD Opteron™ processor based on Hammer technology is planned to power a supercomputer developed by Cray, Inc. intended for nuclear weapon engineering simulations by the Department of Energy’s Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M.

Cray has been selected to develop the massive parallel processing supercomputer, code-named “Red Storm.” The supercomputer is expected to be at least seven times more powerful than Sandia’s current “ASCI Red” supercomputer on Sandia’s 3D, full-physics simulation codes. The system is scheduled to be deployed in 2004.

The computer is expected to use more than 10,000 AMD Opteron processors and will have a theoretical peak performance of 40 trillion calculations per second, or 40 teraflops. The AMD Opteron processor technology will provide 64-bit capability, advanced processing power, on-chip high memory bandwidth, and high on-chip I/O bandwidth required for Sandia’s simulations. It will also feature a simple building block approach with HyperTransport™ technology that will enable easy implementation, and reduce engineering, design and component costs for manufacturers.

ATI has demonstrated visual processing unit (VPU) powered by DDR-2 memory. The memory will go into powering the next generation of graphics cards sometime next year. Here's part of ATI's word on the demonstration:
ATI is a leader in adopting and defining memory technology to advance and define tomorrow's visual reality," said Joe Macri, Director of Technology, ATI Technologies Inc, and Chairman, JC42.3 DRAM Committee, JEDEC. "With the RADEON 9700 PRO, ATI demonstrated that leadership by defining the GDDR3 spec and becoming the first to ship a VPU with a high-speed 256 bit memory interface, and that leadership continues today with the first DDR-2 and DDR-2M powered graphics boards.

IE holes open up Web boobytraps
An Israeli Web-application company has warned users of Internet Explorer that nine related security flaws in the program could be used by malicious hackers to gain access to a victim's computer files. GreyMagic Software said that the vulnerabilities, eight of which are deemed critical, could be exploited using a specially coded Web page that would run malicious programs on a victim's computer if the victim visited the page. Further they said the following:
Using these flaws in combination with other known flaws that can silently deliver files to the user's disk could result in full compromise of the client's computer," said Lee Dagon, head of research and development for GreyMagic.

In addition to letting Net vandals steal private local documents, the flaws could let malicious hackers copy clipboard information, execute arbitrary programs and fool IE users by forging trusted Web sites, the company said in its advisory.
