92209 2002-10-24 21:18:00 Yes Roofus, but each MS "update" gets bloatier and bloatier and bloatier........ 'til one is fed up with it.
I can still access F1 from a hard drive running Dos 6.22, WFWG 3.11 + IE 3 +Netscape 3.04 +Arachne 1.7, with no problems, so one should NOT have to keep upgrading all the time if one doesnt want to.

Cheers

92210 2002-10-24 21:20:00 Hey roofus, no need to sting so hard. :O

I don't think Peter was seeking support for his problem as such, just acknowledging that he too has a problem with fatal exceptions or whatever, and is puzzled by it, just like me.

Your comments regarding the reason for our problems is very likely correct and I can understand that but I'm like Peter, I don't want to upgrade to IE 6 on this machine either. However, I'm not bitching about the problems, just commenting and I dare say it's the same for Peter.

Get your butterfly suit back on again. :D

92211 2002-10-24 21:21:00 I'm not saying that a person MUST upgrade,
but if they have a problem why not try fixing it by getting up to date software, thats why the bring out updates.

If you can acess pressf1 from dos, then great. But your not complaining about any problems.

is a reiteration of what we have been discussing here, but it may clariffy things a bit more formally

92214 2002-10-25 03:55:00 Thanks Susan. As you said, I'm not too worried about the problem - more curious. Why I don't want to go the IE6 way, is that problems can occur with this as well, and IE5.1 suits me fine. But thanks roofus for your info re Java.
Bye

92215 2002-10-25 18:30:00 > Most unhelpful response I have seen for ages -

I fail to see what Java has got to do with it, I have not done anything with java .

Lets go over the facts,
My computer works great, the only time I get the "blue screen" is sometimes when I take a CDROM out of the drive, suddenly I get a few fatal exceptions each night for a week, then for no reason, as they came - they also disappeared,

The only thing I feel guilty for screwing up the computer and giving it fatal exceptions is I keep my Anti virus up to date .

Does anybody think I have lost it and should go and see a doctor?

92216 2002-10-25 18:50:00 I'd do as roofus suggested, each time you get a BSOD, write down the error message, and then see if there is a common thread.
Personally I fail to see what Press F1 has to do with BSODS, never get any problem with it, running Win98SE and IE 5.5SP2, and as previously mentioned neither with old 16 bit browsers like IE 3.

92218 2002-10-25 19:45:00 All V . interesting . Feel a bit left out as I've never had a BSOD .

Celeron 700mghz 64meg pc100 SDram Win98se & Opera 6 .

I think because I'm a light and intermittent user . The comp . mostly turned off, gets rebooted the two-three times a week I use it .

Run Zonealarm and AVG and that's about it . I'm cautious to the point of paranoia as it isn't my computer but I'm responsible for keeping it going .

Yes the techie is a (late) newbie .

All I do is emails, here, and a bit of surfing . Never download & install anything but the bare bones utilities . Runs sweet as .
