When you select Shutdown from the Start Menu, you see a screen telling you it is safe to turn off your computer but the computer does not turn itself off, instead you have to do it yourself by pressing the power button. This FAQ will detail how to fix this problem. The problem exists in that for the computer to turn itself off, it must have APM (Advanced Power Management) enabled. Windows XP does not have APM enabled by default, and so you have to do this from within Windows yourself. To enable APM in Windows XP follow the steps below: 1. Click the Performance and Maintenance icon in the Control Panel. (Click Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance). 2. Click on the Power Options icon. Note: If you do not have category view enabled in the Control Panel, you will not have to click the Performance and Maintenance icon first as the Power Options icon will be visible from within the Control Panel. You can also access the Power Options by right-clicking on an empty area of the desktop and selecting properties. Then click on the Screen Saver tab, followed by the Power button. 3. Within the Power Options dialog box, there will be a number of tabs. One is called APM. Click on this tab, and then tick the "Enable Advanced Power Management Support" tick-box. 4. Click OK and you are done. Note: APM needs to be enabled in the computers BIOS as well. Usually this will be already enabled from the previous Windows installation, but if after following the instructions above, your computer still does not turn itslef off when shut down, then you may have to enable APM in the BIOS. As each BIOS is different please consult your BIOS manual for individual instructions for your computer. If an APM tab is not available, then it could be for a number of reasons. Your PC may not support APM (Windows XP uses APM 1.2), or your computer may be using ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) which is simialr to APM and is preferrable to APM. If your PC uses ACPI and it does not turn itself off on shutdown, then you may have to enable ACPI in the computers BIOS. Again, check you BIOS instruction manual on how to do this.
