2002-10-26 03:47:00 | Heres what the professionals say: PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML-embedded scripting language. The goal of the language is to allow web developers to write dynamically generated pages quickly. see here (www.webguys.com) CGI is a standard for interfacing external applications with information servers, such as HTTP or Web servers. A plain HTML document that the Web daemon retrieves is static, which means it exists in a constant state: a text file that doesn't change. A CGI program, on the other hand, is executed in real-time, so that it can output dynamic information. read about it here (hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu)

2002-10-26 07:40:00 | Just about everything. The major thing that comes to mind is being able to access a wide range of databases. | segfault (655) | |
2002-10-26 08:04:00 | vk_dre why did you drop Orcon because I was thinking of giving them a try. I'm with Quicksilver at the mo and find them very slow where I am. Downloads sometimes less than 1kbs. I miss the first ISP I was with as they were fast and reliable but they went on to better things and sold out to someone else and the connection turned to crap. | mikebartnz (21) | |
2002-10-26 08:48:00 | PHP uses a lot less resources than CGI does. There aren't all that many free hosts that support PHP and teh ones that do generally don't include a SQL database as well/

I dropped Orcon, cos i created a site a while ago, and forgot all bout it, then remembered and now just use it for random stuff. |

2002-10-26 10:48:00 | VK PHP stands for Hypertext PreProcessor - basically it has scripts etc. contained within the page, but they are run on the server, and just the results are sent to the browser, so cutting down the size of web pages as none of the actual source code of the script has to be downloaded. It's basically (very simply put) a free alternative to something like ASP - runs the scripts and accesses databases etc. smoothly, but with PHP everything (almost) is free. I've switched to using PHP (well I'm learning it at the moment) and I like it :) Mike.
