2002-10-25 10:51:00 | Help, I've been trying to directly link two computers (both running WindowsXP) by directparallel cable. I have established the link so that the two computers can 'see' each other, but the guest computer cannot see any folders on the host computer. I have enabled the file sharing protocols and made sure all the correct file sharing components are loaded - and have enabled file sharing on the folders I want to transfer. Having searched all the available help material ad naseum, to no avail, has anyone got any bright ideas on what step I might have missed? Any assistance would be gratefully received.

2002-10-25 20:10:00 | Check the cable speed is the same speed on each of the. See if you have hardware or software flow control on. (i'm just guessing here, i don't know much about this subject) | roofus (483) | |

OK, Make sure your HDD has sharing turned on. (Ive seen it where the file sharing has been turned on but the HDD overlooked. Next, check your equivalent of Network Neighbourhood Properties. Ive found both computers need the following turned on. Client for Microsoft Networks Dial-up Adaptor IPX/SPX- compatible Protocol NetBEUI TCP/IP File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks. Now, some of these may not be required for your immediate use but this tends to be a forgotten section and Ive found its easier to leave them all turned on, as they dont use a lot of recourses. Set both computers up the same and then you can change from guest to host without any rigmarole. Lets know how you get on. Ive only ever set it up on Win95 & Win98 but Im sure you OS will be similar. Cheers Bob |

2002-10-25 22:00:00 | I enabled sharing on the whole C Drive on the host computer, and for good measure also enabled sharing on the My Documents folder | GrahamHunt (2345) | |
2002-10-25 22:13:00 | Ok, that should get you into My Documents. However, you still need suitable Protocols turned on

2002-10-25 23:00:00 | Bummer - I've enabled the additional protocols (NetBEUI and IPX/SPX) . NetBEUI was problematic as XP no longer supports NetBEUI - however the Help and Support section contained instructions for installing NetBEUI under XP. Once again, the link between the two computers is good, but I just can't see the shared folders. Can you clarify what you meant by 'turning the HDD on'. If you mean the C Drive, I have enabled file sharing on that. Also, where do I look for the shared folders? On the Host computer, they are all listed under 'My Network Places'. I presume that this is the same on the guest computer.

2002-10-25 23:45:00 | Sorry Graham, Ive never used XP so probably not much help. However, if you go to explorer on the Host computer do you have a hand under your C drive and My Documents folder? This indicates that Sharing is turned on for these items. Well it does on Win95 & Win98

2002-10-26 00:08:00 | Does XP require to have "matching" users set up on both computers? | Graham L (2) | |
2002-10-26 00:10:00 | You have got a "LapLink parallel compatible" cable? A plain 25 wire cable won't work; a serial Laplink cable can't work. ;-) | Graham L (2) | |
