93222 2002-10-26 07:45:00 Hi...

Does anyone know how to, or of a program that somehow compares the quality output of MP vs Wav type music files ? Currently I am experimenting about with decoding or encoding MP3's to Wav's (with MP3 workshop) to try to hear any improvement in music output...
But can't hear much difference on my PC (Win98SE, 380MB Ram, basic J-S 3D speakers, integrated sound chip). Hence looking for a way to "see", or preferably a program, that can extract and display the differences based on the algorithms used for compression to MP3's)...

Cheers...

93223 2002-10-26 09:12:00 There is no software which can really tell things like this. It's just up to what you think sounds best. A soundcard and speaker upgrade and you'd probably think something else was better. -=JM=- (16)
93224 2002-10-26 10:16:00 but also the mp3 file format has a lower file size than wav files that are the same duration, the quality is slightly upgraded for mp3 if u pay attention to the birates and the sampling playback rate.

cheers,

93225 2002-10-26 13:07:00 there are programs around that you could use to analyse the waveforms.....ermmmm *scratch head* cooledit might be able to do it.

You'd be better off reading up on it, there are a few sites around with that sort of info. save you doing the work yourself.
on your pc you'll likely not be able to hear very well. standard cutoff is around 100Hz on most pc's, so you miss out on a bit of bass, I'm not sure what the upper limit is. You'd do well to find an online hearing test too to find out what YOUR upper limit is. Could make a fair bit of difference to how you interpret different codecs, bitrates etc...

i did some reading a while ago, short of it was LAME mp3 encoder is best above 192 b/s, while you'd be better with ogg vorbis at lower bitrates...
