93587 2002-10-27 22:06:00 Can anyone help me please. I am getting nil response from the manufacturer. I want to do a BIOS update and downloaded the latest BIOS and the only update utility for AMI BIOS on the manufacturer’s site. When, from DOS I run the update utility, I get the following”

A:\>aminf335
DOS/4G Protected Mode Run-time version 2.01a
Copyright (c) Tenberry Software, Inc.1996
* Chipset type - SiS SiS/SB
* Flash Part - SST 39v5020_v1
>Error 2 - File does not exist.

I am stuck. I have triple checked everything. Can anyone understand what it is trying to tell me? Regards to all.

Andrew.

93588 2002-10-27 22:15:00 sounds like your are entering the incorrect file name for the new bios. check that you have the correct DOS name for the file(not the windows name) tweak'e (174)
93589 2002-10-27 22:26:00 Are you 110% certain that the updated bios is the right one for your machine?

93590 2002-10-27 23:17:00 From the web:

Error messages such as 'File not found' or 'ERROR 2: File does not exist' indicates that you are either trying to flash your BIOS from a floppy diskette that may have bad sectors, or you are not typing the name of the BIOS file correctly (including the extension). If you receive this message make sure that you are attempting to update your BIOS from your hard drive and that you are typing the correct name of the BIOS file including the extension.

Look for yourself here (www.amptron.com)

Others have had the same problem, its apparently a case of the wrong instructions you have received?

This is all available in a 10 second look on Google......

93591 2002-10-28 00:06:00 Hmm... that Amptron quote about making sure you are attempting to update the bios from the hard drive is a bit ambiguous/misleading and or in error as the bios has to updated and flashed from a floppy as it correctly says on their web page. Terry Porritt (14)
93592 2002-10-28 03:12:00 One other thing that springs to mind,

Often the Bios utilities are downloaded in Zip form, you may have to extract the file from the zip before using it.

Apologies if it seems to basic a mistake for anyone to make, but believe me it is a common occurence.

93593 2002-10-28 03:40:00 I think the clue to the problem is in the error message. The flash executable most probably requires the 32 bit dos extender program dos4gw.exe. This is used to allow the program to access memory above 1MB. Quite a few dos programs need this, and usually it comes as part of the package. Its a bit unusual? for a flash utility to need it. Award bios doesnt.

One place where you can get dos4gw.exe is here:
www.icdia.org

Remember if you have the wrong bios file there may be extreme strife, like as in your computer wont boot any more :(
