93373 2002-10-27 01:49:00 On my desktop I have an icon (My Network Places). Now I know it has something to do with networking computers.??
But I have no intention of networking computers in this household, (cause main reason can't afford another comptuer to network with.)
So can it be deleted and how, cause I right click on it and there is no delete feature.
It's not doing any harm, just annoys me that it's there and I don't need it.

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

93374 2002-10-27 01:59:00 You can use TweakUI to remove the Network Neighborhood icon, but this is what they say about the consequences of doing so:

"Consequences of hiding Network Neighborhood
Since shell support for the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) notation is handled by the Network Neighborhood, hiding the Network Neighborhood icon will prevent Explorer from accessing resources via UNCs. In order to access network resources from Explorer, you need to map them to a drive letter. Note that the MS-DOS command prompt and other applications are not affected by this setting, because they do not use the Network Neighborhood to resolve UNCs.

In particular, hiding the Network Neighborhood prevents Direct Cable Connection from displaying the contents of the host computer. Aside from this, Direct Cable Connection functions normally.

93376 2002-10-27 02:05:00 The only way I know of is to use Tweake UI,

Install it if you don't already have it then under the desktop section you should find a list of system icons that you can choose to display. Simply remove the tick next to the icon and click ok.

actually I lie I just had a quick look and found out how to do it without using tweake UI. Right Click on the desktop and select properties then on the desktop tab there will be a button that says customize desktop. On clicking this you can then untick the box next to Network Places.

This was on a XP Home computer so I'm not too sure if it will be the same for you but it should be similar if you are not using XP.

93377 2002-10-27 02:45:00 Merlin you could wave your wand but it appears your magic powers are getting like the battery on my FX, a little on the flat side so if you install TweakUI, you can remove the network icon through that. You will get a dire warning but reality I have never had a problem after doing it on every computer I have fiddled with. duckyduck (197)
