2002-10-29 02:00:00 | Hi everyone, sorry I confused you all - yes, I am clicking on File first before Save As! (I thought I had spelled everything out but I had missed that step!) Thanks Babe, I tried as you suggested, but after closing everything down and typing the command in and clicking on OK, I was never prompted to insert my CD. It came up with a dialog box saying it was preparing to install, then please wait while it configured Word 2000 (or words to that effect) but no prompts came up for the CD and after a few minutes I tried going into a previously saved document and the orange box was still there! Speaking of orange boxes, it appeared before when I tried doing a word count on a previously saved document that I opened without launching Word first. It's spreading! So unfortunately, it appears we may need to try Phase II, whatever it is!

2002-10-29 02:53:00 | > I wonder if it a quirk/design of MS to notify > you when there is a new unviewed document/window > open. Sounds like it could be what sam has mentioned above. To test this theory perhaps you could try changing the colour setting of the "flashing" object. or.. perhaps an even easier way - highlight a bit of text - what colour is it once highlighted.. is it orange?? If it is orange it's probably what sam mentioned - it's nothing to worry about, it's just a common feature of Windows. The flashing occurs when you launch an application and it opens minimized or behind another window. For example, you launch a new browser window and it opens BEHIND your current window. Hope this helps! :)

2002-10-29 04:54:00 | Mary, the problem is that the dialogue box should not be in the taskbar at all, it should have the window focus. For some reason the Word window keeps the focus. | godfather (25) | |
2002-10-29 07:33:00 | Godfather, This has really got me puzzled I can't duplicate the problem tried installing a copy of just Word 2000 from Office2000 (don't have Works 2000) on a WinXP w/s with and without SR1a and/or SP2. I can sort of get the problem if I don't set the Prevent Appln from Stealing Focus (good ol TweakUI_XP), but this would not normally be the case in XP. After updating to SR1a and SP2 it didn't make abit of difference to whether I clicked on docs directly (e.g. via My Documents or Explorer) or opened through Word itself. The ONLY time I got a dialogue warning box was if I deliberatly set the &Open value of the file association to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n %1 in other words adding the %1 value forced a dialgue box. Now the only other thing is that this problem was discussed within the original thread and it is the same problem that Word 2002 had before applying the Service Release pack. We could try Tweakuin' the computer and making sure the Focus is set appropriately. Not sure if Write-Click (are you there) has that... but could be worth a try. The 'normal' behaviour is for the objects taskbar icon to flash if user attention is required (I believe). Do you have any other suggestions? Cheers, Babe.

2002-10-29 10:33:00 | Hi Babe, sorry I wasn't there earlier, had to make a living! "We could try Tweakuin' the computer and making sure the Focus is set appropriately . Not sure if Write-Click (are you there) has that . . . but could be worth a try . " I'm not sure what that all means (I'm more of a computer user than a computer whizz!), so if you are indicating there is something else I can try, I may need it spelled out as in your brilliant instructions in your earlier post . I'm amazed this is still confounding people - you guys/gals are my computer heroes! At least it's keeping us all out of mischief! Fingers crossed we'll solve this sooner or later - my computer is getting fed up with me swearing at it! Cheers .

2002-10-29 10:38:00 | Hi Write-Click... sorry I've been a bit busy and in fact I'm off to do some client system updates but will be back in the morning (late I hope). I'll draft some instructions up for you and post them tomorrow (or is it today?) Cheers, Babe.

2002-10-29 11:07:00 | No problem Babe, I've got some training tomorrow and a meeting tomorrow night (no rest for the wicked!) so don't go out of your way to get something to me. I've put up with it for a while so it's not going to kill me to put up with it for longer! I appreciate most people have day jobs (or night jobs) so I'm just thankful for any help I get, whenever I get it. Don't work too hard! | write-click (2248) | |
2002-10-31 06:30:00 | Write-Click, I'm still looking at this problem... I haven't forgotten, just rebuilding another workstation to do some more testing. Cheers, Babe.

2002-10-31 21:07:00 | That's fine Babe, I've got plenty of work to keep me busy so I'll just keep checking back here every day or so to see if you've come up with the definitive answer! As long as I open Word first, there is no problem, so it's not the end of the world. And besides, the Targa Rally is on and coming our way tomorrow, so I probably won't be online for a while, too many gorgeous cars to drool over! | write-click (2248) | |
2002-10-31 21:12:00 | Write-Click, Yes I'm off to the Targa Rally in the Wairarapa today (time off) so will have another go tonight/Saturday. Cheers, Babe.
