the ram is holding too much to process carefully and as a result most programs take more time to load properly, because most of the system resources are going towards the icons loading and using up the ram. The ram gets "clogged" in a matter of speaking. and impairs loading time.;)

As far as desktops, why not just have multi user login, that way each person using the PC can do what they like ( to a degree) without affecting other users..

So so the desktop icons are always loaded even when not being displayed ?:|

Yes, the memory is holding them there, where else would it be? Ur a tricky piece of work. answer a question and u keep asking again and again. :D

how does this work :D :p

So this only affects the "Desktop" and not the QuickLaunch and any other icons anywhere.
