94119 2002-10-29 05:38:00 Hi All

Trying to reinstall an HP Pavilion 4410 from it's restore disk but the installation seems to be corrupt.
Have had numerous messages saying the FAT is mismatched, there are cross linked files everywhere, free space reporting is incorrect - you get the picture. Have run NDD but it can't seem to repair, and Disk Defragmenter is an impossibility.
From what I've researched still don't quite understand whether it is the hard drive, or have to do a low level format and rebuild the FAT, or is the HP restore disk damaged or corrupt?

All info gratefully accepted.

94120 2002-10-29 06:57:00 You don't say what OS but I'm assuming 98. Since you got the PC have you converted it to Fat32. Those restore disk are a pain because the are supposed to restore everything to the state it was in when purchased so losing all the updated drivers etc. mikebartnz (21)
94121 2002-10-29 07:31:00 try doing :

fdisk /mbr

from a boot floppy before using recovery CD.

*WARNING*

this may have devastating results. But then again it could just fix it.

94122 2002-10-30 01:41:00 Has your system crashed to the extent that you are trying to restore it to "out of the factory" state? So you don't expect to keep any data?

If you are getting lots of FAT errors and crosslinked files, the only real answer is a reformat. There is a limit to what NDD can repair. ;-) If it won't reformat, the answer is a new disk :_|

Your recover CD will be "perfect".

FDISK /MBR won't help here. That sometimes makes a disk bootable "again". I don't think that your disk will boot.

94123 2002-10-30 03:04:00 Thanks for the replies

Had already tried your suggestions, yep it's Win 98, yes it shows up as FAT32, the system went to pieces after an external USB HP CD writer install and basically came up with Windows Protection error at start up.
Scandisk and NDD consistently find the same problems and says it has repaired them but it's not the case of course.
Ran Fdisk /mbr, have run HD utilities from Maxtor and the reports are that the drive is fine, no bad blocks show up during a scandisk either.

My next plan of attack is to install another copy of Win 98 and see how the system performs - but hey keep them coming, the "inanimate object" will not win!!

94124 2002-10-30 03:47:00 Try going into the BIOS and 'auto detecting' the drive. The problems you're having remind me of trouble I had along those lines some time ago. Also, right mouse click on the desktop 'My Computer' and look at the performance tab. Does it say any drives are running in "Dos compatibility mode"? That could indicate something is wrong with the hard disk drivers. In the Device Manager tab does it show any devices that have problems? Rod J (451)
94125 2002-10-30 04:04:00 Have you run a scandisk?
Give that a shot, that's helped me out last time I had a similar problem.

94126 2002-10-30 06:59:00 Again all good advice but tried - have done an installation of Win 98 from another disk I have, and not the HP Restore Disk - guess what all seems to be in order, defrag cruises through no problems - of course problems with drivers, but that was not my concern.

So would have to say that the disk provided by HP is suspect - do you think they'll give me another one....?

Thanks All
