94103 2002-10-29 04:54:00 Just thought I'd share this.
I joined Paradise from Xtra about 4 months back. I used to connect to Xtra at around 42000bps with my 56k dial-up connection (you may be able to get Jetstream in Otorohanga, but not here in Hamilton), but the Paradise connection was only ever at around the 35000bps. I assumed that this was just how it was and never gave it much more thought. Last weekend, She Who Must Be Obeyed decided that we needed to replace the oldish ex-telecom phone in the kitchen with a newer, nicer looking model (a phone is a phone is a phone - isn't it? Apparently not!). I argued on this unwarranted expense to no avail and a new one was duly got and installed. Result? - I now connect at 52000bps all the time! my internet connection has never been as speedy and downloads just fly. I have humbly apologise to SWMBO and acknowledged her obviously superior technical knowledge on telephones (she is a very experienced user).
Moral? - if your connection ain't the best, try disconnecting the phones and see what happens - you too may end up very happy!

94104 2002-10-29 09:05:00 You are obviously a fan of "Rumpole of the Bailey" :-)

For some time (12 years) I lived in Australia and had a touchphone 200.

Every now and then my connection died to a BBS. I was using Fidonet and wasn't on the Internet.

Problem traced to the phone as every so often the phone co would send a pulse of electricity down the line to keep the phone alive.

94105 2002-10-29 09:28:00 anything is possible, but highly unlikely in most cases like urs. must have been that telecom decided to beef up the wiring :D or maybe the dragracers at meremere got p***** off when the race was cancelled on Sunday and hit a telephone pole with their cars. :D:p:D

cheers,

94106 2002-10-29 09:34:00 Yep, to connect at 52000bits p/s I need to disconnect certain phones here. A bit of a pain in the backside, but we have about 4 or 5 phones :) Otherwise I connect at about 28800bits p/s :-/ segfault (655)
94107 2002-10-29 09:37:00 The Touchphone 200 connects periodically to take a "gulp" of the 48v DC phantomed on the phone line to charge its internal battery.

Bad news for modems. They disconnect.

Interesting that the change of ISP raised the phone loading problem. May be the level of signal is different from the new ISP, but a good cure anyway.

I am on ADSL now, but when I was on dial-up I fixed the problem by installing a small PABX that isolated all phones when Internet was connected (and vice versa).

94109 2002-10-29 10:18:00 Hi Andy & all,

I have just upgraded the house-phone from a Telecom(not sure how ancient it was) to a modern cordless and my connection speed went from a constant 45333/48000bps to 50667 regular and on odd occasions 52000bps!

No other changes made and I am suitably impressed!!

Cheers,Kiwitas,;)

94111 2002-10-30 09:06:00 Hi Andy, the first thing we do when testing an internet connection is to disconnect the phones,as ALL phones load up the line with a certian ammount of impedance, some a lot more than others.Old 100 dial type phones are diabolical for it and fax machines can do the same. All are different,so if your speed is not too good, try taking the phones out one at a time and see the difference. You may find it is just 1 particular phone that causes the slowing.

94112 2002-10-30 10:38:00 Um... please excuse my ignorance. How does one check one's connection speed?

If I click on the Internet icon in the task bar it shows that I am connected at 56,000bps and also gives time on line, bytes sent and bytes received.

I can see the speed I'm downloading at as I use an Ultra dish but this, of course, doesn't show the upload speed.

Using Win98
