93997 2002-10-29 02:35:00 My friend was suspended from school last friday for "looking at porn" when all he was doing was using the net to look at some info on cars for his speech. The website opened all these pornography websites and banners and he was trying to close them but the teacher saw. I told them what happened but they flat out refused to change their mind. We all had to sign this "Anti porn" thing in the begigning of year.

Is there a program with a huge list of blocked porn sites that can run with IE so they dont come up? I can't imagine what would happen to me if my parents saw that come up.

93998 2002-10-29 02:43:00 There is a filter you can turn on (no pun intended) in Internet Explorer (tools - internet options - content), but from experience, this doesn't always work. You can always download something like WebSite Blocker 1.0 (download.com.com), but you get what you don't pay for with the free stuff.

The school should really have software in place to prevent kids from accessing porn. Perhaps you should tell them that? There are good deals for schools on purchasing products like SurfControl (www.surfcontrol.com) or WebMarshall (http:)..

This file contains a list of various sites and will prevent your system from connecting to those sites. Note that only sites that are listed in the file will not be able to be accessed, which may not include every adult site ever created.

94000 2002-10-29 02:46:00 Hi,

There is such a program, infact several.

One such program (which is popular with schools) is Vicomsoft's Intergate, it is an advanced proxy server and has the option of subscribing to the cyber-not list (very EXPENSIVE), which is simply a huge list of impropriate sites, the proxy server then automatically blocks these sites.

For home users the are programs like net nanny, but again these cost.

If you’re just worried about the popups, then have a look round for a popup killer, often these are free.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

94001 2002-10-29 02:47:00 P.S - I just got pointed to We-blocker (www.we-blocker.com).. which is apparently quite good. honeylaser (814)
94002 2002-10-29 02:49:00 Schools are paranoid about this, because some parents, police, and politicians are pathologically paranoid.

But it's not necessarily the fault of someone who clicks on a link. There are a lot of hijacked URLs. A list will never catch all the offensive sites.

94003 2002-10-29 03:03:00 Although everyone will deny thier personal interest the interest in porn, it is and has always been huge, and since long before the internet. Because of this it is almost unstopable. What can be done is stopping pop ups (this is one of the reason that i run opera)
So if that page on "cats" you just looked up turns out to be something a little more human, then atleast you won't be looking at 10 windows of them.

A thought, the more we try to cencor, the more the descriptions will become obscure, soon it will be impossible to look up anything to do with bodys (including car bodys) without stummbling across porn pages.

Porn itself doesn't bother me, but what really annoys me is the porn spam. I'd like to see some international agreement that allow the public hanging of any spammer. There's something distasteful about opening E-mail that arrives at at address that has well and truly done the rounds, and being bombarded with "barbie loves her horse" type spam It is for this reason that i was forced to close my pugwash@ihug.co.nz account after 5 years of having this same address.

94004 2002-10-29 03:36:00 Well I suppose you could ask the teacher to check the history of the terminal your friend was using, and if it was all very innocent, they should let him back.

Even headmasters have been caught looking at the odd porn site, and even the child pornography branch of the NZPolice have been at it

94005 2002-10-29 03:59:00 Well first of all the teachers at your school don't know a thing about the internet if they didn't realise that could happen.

Also, why the heck are they letting you have free reign on the internet. At the college I'm at everything goes through Watch Dog (http://www.watchdog.net.nz). At the previous school people didn't have access to the net and when they did there was software blocking it.
