94065 2002-10-30 03:19:00 You're so right Susan. I would never wear a fur coat, etc. but even though I think possums are cute, I do have possum fur insoles for my motorcycle boots and they're fantastic! So warm, they don't flatten like sheepskin and they don't smell either - big bonus in bike boots! There was a woman in Wellington selling possum fur neck collars - hard to explain, but they had the fur on the inside and a zip up the front - great for winter. We saw them at the Brass Monkey bike rally but my other half convinced me that $70 was too dear. I've regretted not getting one ever since as she doesn't respond to emails and I REALLY WANT ONE! And apparently they do make great pets, my dad had one when he was growing up and he said it was like a little baby! Everyone say aah! write-click (2248)

94067 2002-10-30 07:24:00 A guy I work with told me that possum fur was what the wool spinners are after for blending with the top end products. After dispatching you prey, you pluck all the fur off and bag it up. Theres a guy goes around the North Island buying it all up. Can't recall how much he is/was getting per kilo but it's enough to supplement the income.

94068 2002-10-30 07:26:00 Oh yes I forgot to mention... Possum stew tastes great. Simmilar to rabbit if you get them in the open country. A bit gamier if taken from the more forested regions. Craigb (688)

Has anyone else eaten possum ?:|?:|?:|

:O

Living in the bush, we used to have pet possums as a child. Used to hand feed them and everything - one had very lovely black fur. We had a population boom happening one stage, and my mother used to put the "spares" into a cage and drive around the Waitakere ranges at night to release them ..... hope no one was watching!

There are hardly any possies around their place these days, so numbers must be dropping.

Yeah... my CAT! Came home at 1am one night after dropping the other half off in hospital - kidney stone - to find 3 cats and a labrador grouped around a possum in the middle of the living room floor. It was lying there staring at me in the eye.

After hesitating in the doorway for a couple of minutes I approached slowly only to discover that the hunter had actually dispatched his prey (makes a change from live rabbits and rats in the living room).

Find gardening gloves, lock the hunter in other room, pick up possum by tail and dispense with it by flinging it into the bush. The cat was Not Amused!

Then there was that live possum many years ago. 4 year old comes flying into the bedroom in the morning. "Mummy, there's a.... a.... a.... RABBIT in the living room!" I stood at the top of the stairs protecting my children with the skirts of my dressing gown whilst the other half went to investigate. (He crept quietly down to the kitchen to press the buzzer for the cottage. Our tenant came up and got rid of it for us.... laughing his head off).

If anyone's up for crumbing a possum - feel free to visit. The Cat will show you where they live.
