| 94036 | 2002-10-29 04:58:00 | Good on you Liam, I wish you luck with your possum destruction venture. Unfortunately it's going to take some very determined and clever marketing overseas before possum skin and fur products take off because there is a lot of resistance from animal lovers towards them. Consumers overseas don't distinguish between possums and endangered species when it comes to fur coats, etc otherwise they would be selling like hot cakes and be hugely successful. Until someone comes along and cracks that market there's never going to be much money made in getting rid of the pests. A bit of pocket money, yes, but only the really enthusiastic bother. Bullets aren't cheap. Any entrepreneurs out there? :-) |

| 94038 | 2002-10-29 05:27:00 | 'possum destruction venture', that has a nice ring to it B-) I think its going to take quite a few entrepreneurs to get rid of them though, recently we had a team of govt sponsored possum killers sweep thought our semi-rural area poisoning and trapping the furry leaches, however it still doesnt take long for them to empty the three bait station that we have positioned around the house. You might be able to export them if the govt got behind the idea and spend a few million of marketing; however that isnt likely to happen unless trees get voting rights. Cheers Liam |

| 94041 | 2002-10-29 06:38:00 | When I lived in the Sounds there was a bounty for us school children (Waitaria Bay School). Joy Cowley lived near by and once a year we could bring in possum tails to the school and she gave $1 to the pupil and $1 to the school for every possum tail. I got on quite well with one of the teachers/ex-teacher/busdriver and he'd give me his ones and we'd go a 70/30 (IIRC) split on the money. Also once a year there was also another incentive, run by Joy Cowley again. Each bag of 10 tails was an entry into a raffle. There were 3 prizes I think. The same person mentioned above that gave me the tails also sold the skins as well. Was quite funny driving to school in the bus and the driver stops and runs off the side of the road and bring a possum cage into the bus. |
