Windows xp firewall doesn't even have half a cents worth but is still useful if u don't have any other firewall installed.

Proably the best free firewall program around.

So do i, quite good atually, also has the add blocker which is useful, but now always reliable.

that has been proven that Blacl ICe occasionaly does not work due to some glitch in the software itself.

93668 2002-10-28 07:58:00 Free firewalls include Zone Alarm Free Version, Outpost and Tiny Personal Firewall. I have used both ZA and Tiny at various times and found both good at there job, I have heard that Outpost is also good but no experience of it.

On the paid versions, ZoneAlarm Pro is good, I understand there is a paid version of Outpost, there is BlackIce but that used to only cover in bound intrusions unless it has been changed, Nortons Internet Security is supposed to also be good.

There are others, a search on google will uncover more, some free, some not.

93669 2002-10-28 08:34:00 I would also like to second Agnitum's Outpost firewall. I have tried ZA but it seemed to upset a few of my other programs. It is not hard to use once you have set up the basic few rules. As a bonus, it also stops pop-ups ads.

A firewall works both ways - you can see what is also trying access the net, and deny permission if you want to. My Windows Explorer program had a constant burning desire to call home after I had done a critical update. As I couldn't see any valid reason why it should chat to Microsoft, I permanently denied its access to the net. It is interesting to see what programs want to call home occasionally.

Although this is how your office programs check for updates, I find it easier to go check manually rather have them checking all the time.

93670 2002-10-28 08:53:00 Well until recently I used ZA free version, but eventually got a bit fed up with the amount of resources it was using (10%), and prompted by a Tweak'e posting, went to Kerio, which only takes up about 1% or less resources.

It seems ok, you have to set one or two things manually, like closing port 135, otherwise it passes the Gibson tests, and is an 'install and forget' program. Doesnt cause me any problems like some have reported with the latest ZA.

93671 2002-10-28 09:10:00 I am not quite sure why people are asserting that Zone Alarm is the best (or even amongst the best firewalls), given the number of people who have posted here in the past saying they have either had problems with it, or have abandoned it.

Another free firewall, which I have used since I decided against Zone Alarm, is Sygate Personal Firewall, available from soho.sygate.com

I have found it to be very user friendly, and reliable according to tests on various web sites that test firewalls. I use it with Windows XP Pro (with the XP firewall turned off of course). Sygate Personal Firewall was also recommended by NZ PC World some issues ago.

93672 2002-10-28 09:11:00 firstly it depends on what you call "best".

ZA is the easiest to use byt ver3 has been somewhat troublesome.
tiny and now kerio require a lot more work to set up properly.
with most rule based firewalls you need to set up rules for each program (i suspect a lot of people simple let a program full reign which is not great).
out post is a little easier as it has ready made rules for a lot of programs.

93673 2002-10-28 11:31:00 I also use Sygate Personal Firewall after trying a few of the others including ZA (which caused conflicts on my machine) and Outpost (couldn't use voice chat with that one, no known cure) and Tiny (to difficult to understand). Sygate has had a few problems as well, such as deciding not to load occasionally, but other than that it has rated higher than ZA in tests I have read as is really easy to get along with. 93674 2002-10-28 18:41:00 I'm voting for Agnitums Outpost. It has ad blocking and I have no complaints so far. I've installed it on about 10 machines and have had no complaints from users either and their skill range varies from the beginner to way above my head. Worth a try anyway and being free if you don't like it then just uninstall and try another. dipstick01 (445)

What a load of crap. The only 'expert' who says this is Steve Gibson. If he knew what he was talking about he'd know Black Ice isn't even meant to be a firewall, it's an IDS program.

steve gibsons big mouth aside for a minute . . . . . . . the prob with black ice is that, except for the very first version, its been sold as a firewall .
it does make a good IDS which can compliment a hardware firewall .

just to add . i'm not to sure but i think the latest ver of black ice has now incorperated outbound protection as well .

however most home pcs don't really need this exspecially when a free one will do the job .
