93854 2002-10-28 10:14:00 I am thinking of getting a tower case (mid) and adding a dual CPU AMD MP - not the quickest w/ 2 CPUs and a Ultra320 64 bit PCI card w/ a Seagate Cheetah 15k RPM drive, IDE HP CDRW (2X), SCSI JAZ, FDD, and a SCSI DVD-ROM. Getting parts overseas, am not rich.

Are cooling req... for the drives?? I hear the HDD gets far too hot? Are there fans designed for HDD??

93856 2002-10-28 20:28:00 mmmmmmm.......nice.

as long as you get a decent case HDD cooling should be ok. i would suggest a case that has a HDD bay right in front of the fans(exhast or intake depending on case) eg this one[/ur] or [url=http://english.aopen.com.tw/products/housing/hq08.htm]this (english.aopen.com.tw). a 400watt+ psu of course.

if you need to save a little bit of $$$$ i would suggest an IDE dual socket A board instead of the scsi one and use IDE DVD-ROM and IDE CDROM/RW.

93858 2002-10-28 21:41:00 Those cheetahs will require a good cooling kit with heatsink and fan like part number XH5092 from Dick Smith. If the disk is double height then that cooler will not fit without modification however.
Those disk will get very hot; -finger burning hot without a heatsink. If you look at the spec sheets the cubic volume of air required to travel over them per minute is very high. A big brand server will have adequate cooling, but a hand built computer case will be unlikely to provide this airflow, even with 3 case fans etc. Therefore a dedicated cooling unit will
be required

I suggest you learn a bit about SCSI before proceeding. SCSI has many pitfalls; -for example do not put the JAZ device on your LVD cable as it will drag the entire bus speed down.

Personally I would recommend you buy only Utra160 devices and a top quality terminated LVD cable if you want to keep things easy.

I would scrap the JAZ and get a motherboard with Firewire or USB 2.0 and get an external 80GB ATA100 HDD Unit. This will piss all over a JAZ for performance.

93859 2002-10-28 22:17:00 biff will know maore about this than me but why go for a scsi drive?

why not 3xIDE in RAID5?? won't have the seek speed but should be way cheaper.

93860 2002-10-28 22:19:00 the cdrw am sticking to my HP 2/2/6 one (IDE). The JAZ can get abroad for dirt cheap since its gone out $50nz. Well maybe I won't we have CDRW drives these days. maybe the dvd too on IDE ... since these are used for single tasking usually.

I am able to get ultea160 card for like 180nz and 320 for bit more. i may stick w/ 160 instead. not into games so can save a bit on the v-card...... not the fastest amd thou.....

hey, what is the diff btwn, AMD XP and MP??
thanks for the help.

93861 2002-10-28 22:30:00 I don't replace computer frequentlly so its ok to pay a bit more. I have a 6yr old AMD 200, 32MB, win95 still running good. But I think soon I need to upgrade.

yes they are pricy but I get abroad. I want the seek rate, have always been a fan of SCSI when they specialise in multi-tasking and workload. I use it for photography - photoshops as an interests.
Thanks, yes maybe I will skip the JAZ and go for a ZIP through IDE or so...that of course depends on the price gap bwtween dual and single channel scsi cards. I like to use removable cartidges.
