1319674 2012-12-22 03:39:00 Windows security Center is turned off and the security center cannot be started, says a popup when the computer is booted.

The operating system is Vista Ultimate.

What do I need to do to fix the problem ?

Merry Xmas to all :-)

1319675 2012-12-22 04:38:00 Do you have an antivirus installed? Nick G (16709)
1319676 2012-12-22 04:43:00 Possibly a completely incorrect assumption, but sounds like what happened to me when I got infected with Win32/Sirefef.gen!C recently.
Does going to various security related sites redirect you to a similar looking fake page?

1319677 2012-12-22 05:45:00 Oh Vista, not windows8, misread it sorry.
the-bogan sounds right, looks like a virus.

If it is the windows security center virus, the above link provided a pretty good set of instructions on how to remove it.

1319678 2012-12-22 05:54:00 www.microsoft.com

From (my) memory, I reinstalled, MSSE, ran a scan, which identified a couple of things, used CCleaner to clear out temp stuff, ran an online scan of NOD32, which found stuff in a temp folder that CCleaner didn't..

Just wondering if this thread and pressf1.pcworld.co.nz are related.

Yes, MSE and I have scanned today to see if it found anything, but alas no, nothing found.

go.microsoft.com

It's meant to detect and repair the security settings

No, not that I am aware of anyway.

Yes I do.

1319683 2012-12-22 10:11:00 Ran NOD32/ ESET online scanner. 202753 files took 2 hours 23 minutes, but best of all, no infected files.

So I guess back to square one, but I have a few follow up's to do yet! But its getting late, so tomorrow...
