Not sure how much power we're going to use.

What is the cheapest power company / plan to go with?

Powershop doesn't seem as cheap as they're made out to be, and I don't want to stuff around on their website buying up power packs or whatever in advance to save a few $$ here and there.

Still haven't got my head around the whole pricing thing... Uncontrolled? day/night? heavy or light user? ???

Someone help me :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

1294327 2012-08-13 03:43:00 Just moved to Christchurch and wife has been checking it out and talking to friends here and the consensus is leaning towards Contact at the moment but that could change. Our house in Nelson we have been with Genisis and they were the cheapest there for us.

With 2 adults and an 18 year old with 3 desktops and water but not heating and me at home everyday we were using around 26-30 units a day

1294328 2012-08-13 04:28:00 Here, sort by price:
www.powerswitch.org.nz

and also:

Sort by customer service:

Cause the cheapest isn't necessarily always the best.

With wood you'll save a bit, probably hot water will be your biggest cost.

1294329 2012-08-14 01:28:00 Genesis is good at matching or bettering other companies so maybe try getting some prices off Mercury, etc and see if they will do better. FoxyMX (5)
1294330 2012-08-14 05:13:00 I had to go through the same excercise three months ago as we were switching from electric hot water storage to infinity gas system, and since we were moving to dual energy we wanted to get the best deal.
We went here and did the comparisons: www.whatsmynumber.org.nz We switched from Energy Online to Genesis based on the advice we took from the website.
In our instance continuous flow gas hot water should have saved us money - well it does not seem to have been the case ... go figure ... and we are in the market again!
It is worth a look though.
Best of luck wading through this mire that is power shopping... :p

Hi Plod, I see your point entirely, but try following my reasonoing here.

Before switching to gas we did a huge amount of research and scoped all the downfalls and possible snags we could face; you know most of our friends have gas hot water and swear black and blue they have better showers and less costs.

We do not have teenage kids (yet) and an 11 and a 6 years old should not impact as much, one should presume, as their showers are usually monitored by an adult - just in case they flood the house or repaint the bathroom sort of thing. :)

The amount of showers as well as the time spent in the shower seems to roughly be the same. Funny thing is we overcalculated the amount of cubic metres of gas for an average family of 4 and we still would come out better on our calculations. Just to give you an idea, if the gas hub stated an average family of 4 would use 250 units per month we went for 450.

So, all things being even we should have saved. We don't. All we can think of we made the wrong choice on the provider with the daily distro charges being a little steep in relation to the price per unit. We are in the process of considering lower daily charges for a higher price per unit. I'll keep you posted on that. Also, when we moved from Energy Online to Genesis we lost a whole 10% discount on prompt payment, and that also does make a difference in my view.
