1294228 2012-08-12 20:07:00 Very strong sulphur smell in Napier right now under a damp overcast sky with a bit of drizzle.

1294229 2012-08-12 20:40:00 Nothing reported on Geonet for the last 24 hours (i.e. 0730 Sunday). The smell may possibly emanate from White Island that has a northerly blowing, and a Northwesterly over most of East cape and Hawke Bay. Having said that the wind at the moment is all over the place and is better described as a "drift" as opposed to a "flow".

I'll see if our mate Ken Ring has anything to say ...

1294230 2012-08-12 20:45:00 I have had a look around at the media and the Geonet sites and no mention of it. Could be the smell of the pine pollen which does tend to have a sulphur like smell. The actual smell is stronger than it was from last weeks eruption. Could smell it inside this morning but not last week.

1294231 2012-08-12 21:21:00 At ground zero here drove along SH46 an hour ago and the answer is NO it has not gone up again. Winds blowing the wrong direction for Napier to get any fallout if it did.

Like Trev said You got any pine trees near you?

1294233 2012-08-12 22:50:00 If there is any wind here it is coming from a NW direction the direction of Tongariro.

I'm sure that will solve it, Ken doesn't let pesky little things like science stop him from having all the answers.

1294235 2012-08-13 06:52:00 I was talking to a person in Hastings today who also said they had a strong sulphur smell over there this morning.

1294236 2012-08-13 07:54:00 Well I will be very surprised if you claiming to smell it that strong because like I said I spent the day today on the road between Taupo and National Park and the wind and vapour clouds were blowing more southerly than westerly. Very little smell other than normal background levels in fact the strongest pong was near the thermal areas in Taupo. The mountain is venting quite vigorously more than Keatahi, got the photos to prove it (between cloud) coldfront (15814)
1294237 2012-08-13 09:06:00 Our predominant wind in NZ is a westerly and I would imagine that as the steam drifted higher it would get caught in the westerly wind and get blown to the east.
